BionX Human-Electric Hybrid

BionX is a hybrid drive system that combines human effort and an electric motor to power the bike. The rider experiences reduced effort while maintaining the exercise benefit. The basic system includes adjustable assisted pedal power and regenerative braking.  The more advanced system adds a more powerful motor, throttle control for fully motorized cycling and up to 40 miles of assisted travel per charge.

The motor is fully enclosed in the rear wheel and installs in minutes.  A command center on the handlebars includes a digital display for speed and power levels.  The compact battery fits smartly to the water bottle mounts or a rear rack.  The basic system is shown installed on a new Schwinn Sierra.

The Dutch affectionately refer to them as Grandma and Grandpa bikes.

They are a staple of transportation in Holland, and should be in civilized cities and towns throughout the world. The emphasis here is on "civilized " transportation; the design took shape in the 1900's and has changed little since then.

They just got it right the first time. The seat to handlebar relationship lets one ride comfortably upright. The step-through frame makes mounting and dismounting easy . The rear fender skirt keeps clothes out of the rear wheel and sheds mud and mess away from the bike and rider.

The fully enclosed chain adds cleanliness and reduces maintenance. And there is even a built-in bike lock . One concession that has been made for our rugged, local topography; a new SRAM P5 5-speed rear hub has been fitted for a wider range of gearing.

These bikes are the real thing, made in Holland with lugged steel frames. They are tough as nails, practical and have a certain attractive homeliness.
