THE RIVER

Lost for so long among the concrete and the steel
of modernization -- it
sparkles with an inner tranquility along its waterways.

All manner of waterfowl
nest among its tall grasses,
they grudgingly share
their environment with the garbage
let loose by those who don't seem
to enjoy the peaceful sounds
that drift and mingle along its waterways.

Rippling water
invites the living to
pause and listen
to the rhythm of the river,
while the sun sinks below the horizon
washing the rocks and the trees along the river's banks
with reds and quiet oranges.

And as dusk falls
along the banks of the Los Angeles River
the watersouls emerge from their hidden homes
rejoicing in the knowledge
that the river survives.
