Another Storm
There was no reason to cut him down.
He was a young Oak tree
with a good and strong spirit...
– The Education of Little Tree
I touched the water at the banks
to cleanse myself
but I look for diamonds and gold
– lost for amber bottles
I clean what I can
to save the river
that already flows
like a dying bull
with spears on his back
as he fights
the matadors,
awaiting the sword
the Pope has sent
his apologies
and asks for forgiveness
for politics
he does not understand
so I hike the hills
on the city streets
and find a river that is old and still trying
to teach about life
much of which is unseen
