Escape

As fast as my bruised legs can go,
I head for the wooden stairs
I won't look over my shoulder,
I already know that you're right behind me,
Chasing after me.
You smack me as if I were your punching bag
I fall hard on the wooden steps, trying to escape.
Crying, I beg you to stop
Hoping that maybe for once you will.
I tell you I am sorry and promise to be more gracious.
Shrieks of pain leave my mouth and enter your ears
Yet I still doubt that you've heard any of them.
Gathering up all my strength, I push you away from me
And finish running the stairs.
I hide in a closet.
Shivering with fear, I remain quiet there
While you search for me.
You call out my name and threaten me
For once I will not come out and answer you.
I stay hidden until I am sure you are in a drunken sleep.
Quietly, I slip underneath the sheets of my bed
I am grateful
Knowing that today was one of my luckier days.
