Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA):
A player with FOUR or more accrued seasons and whose contract has expired. They are f
ree to sign with any club beginning March 2nd, and with no compensation owed to the old club. If the player does not sign by July 16, his rights revert to his old club if the team has made a "tender" offer (110 percent of last year's salary) to him by June 1. His old club then has until the 10th week of the season to sign him. If he does not sign by that 10th week (usually 2nd Sunday in November), he must sit out the season. If no tender is offered by June 1, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season. A team can secure the rights of an unrestricted free agent by placing a “franchise tag” on him. Depending on the type of “franchise tag” placed on the player, this would eliminate, or limit, another team’s ability to negotiate with, or sign, him.  Teams can designate only one franchise player each year and the tag guarantees a player the minimum salary of the top-five players at his position. The period that teams can place a “franchise tag” on one of their unrestricted free agents for 2005 is between Feb. 8 and Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. EST.

Restricted Free Agent (RFA):
Are players who have accured exactly THREE credited seasons and whose contract has expired. These players may sign an “offer sheet” with another team beginning March 1, but the original team havs until April 22 to match it and retain the player’s rights, if they choose to. If the original team decides not to match the offer, they could receive compensation in the form of draft picks. If a player don’t receive an “offer sheet” from another club by April 15, their rights are retained by the original team.

Exclusive Rights Free Agents (EFA):
Are players who have TWO OR LESS credited seasons and whose contract has expired. The player must be offered a contract by the team by March 1st, when their contracts for the previous year expire. If a player is not offered a contract by that date, they become Unrestricted Free Agents.

To gain 1 credited season towards free agency, a player must have been on one of the following lists for six or more games in a given season: active, inactive, reserve/injured or reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP).
