Lyon, France: April 5-12, 1998
Suckered into going to France for a conference, my only salvation
was to share the misery with Barbara. Hence I undertook to trick
her into going along. Here are some pictures chronicling our ensuing
ordeal.
- Horse Fountain
In the center of the place Terreaux square, this fountain is
designed by Bartholdi of Statue of Liberty fame. It depicts a
river goddess riding her chariot.
- Statue of Louis XIV
Found in the place de Bellecour, this statue shows King Louis
XIV on horseback. In the background can be seen the Notre Dam
de Fouvière and Lyon's Tour Metallique (a miniature version
of Paris' Eiffel Tower).
- Roman Ruins
Lyon was the capital of Gaul during the Roman empire. These ruins
are adjacent to a very nice underground Roman museum.
- Grand Amphitheater
The larger of the two theaters is still used for modern productions
(Light towers and a wooden stage are the only modern additions.).
The smaller amphitheater can be seen in the background.
- Petite amphitheater
The colored tile of both amphitheaters is remarkably well preserved.
Geneva & Gruyères, Switzerland: April 10-11,1998
Geneva, Switzerland is a mere 158 km from Lyon, France. So
we took the opportunity to visit Steve & Monique. Mostly we
tooled around Fermey Voltaire and Gruyères
where we ate fondue and visited a chateau with a rather odd art
exhibit L'Art
Fantastique au Château de Gruyères.
