Picture of BruceWelcome.  I worked for several years in the defense industry before being laid off. After losing my job I returned to school to seek a new career in geology. My academic interests are Geographical Information Systems, Global Positioning Systems and Remote Sensing.

During the winter of 1999, I participated in an expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula. We flew to the Falkland Islands, boarded a ship and sailed south to Antarctica. Along the way we visited South Georgia Island and the South Orkney Islands.

I spent the 1996 summer at Geology Field Camp. We stayed in the beautiful town of Big Pine, California nestled between the Sierra Nevada and the White Mountain ranges. Temperatures reached over a hundred degrees on most days.

During the summer of 1995, I had the opportunity to participate in a seismic survey as a student intern with the Geophysics department at Stanford University's School of Earth Sciences. I worked with the PASSCAL team at Stanford (now based in New Mexico) and in the field at Montana and Wyoming with the SAREX and Deep Probe Experiments.

When I'm not working or studying, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, bicycling, square dancing, and ballroom dancing.

Upon graduation in 2001, the opportunity for working as a geologist was limited as geology companies were not interested in my engineering or computer background.  In short, after an interesting diversion studying rocks, I returned to a career in engineering.
