BC CELTIC MUSIC CLUB

FALL 2007

INFORMATION

BC CELTIC MUSIC CLASS - 7:30-8:30 pm Wednesday

SLOW SESSION  at 8:30 PM

IN THE ROOST AT THE OLD GYM  (HAVERTY CENTER)

AROUND THE FIREPLACE

A "session" is a music tradition throughout Ireland and Scotland where players come together to play traditional tunes and sing a few songs.  The purpose is to have fun and share experience in community.  The Irish call this CRAIC!

If you have ever been to a session in Ireland or in the ITRAD community here in the states, you know that the music is played fast, without sheet music, and it does not stop.  Slow sessions, however, are for learning the music and the tradition.  We will have sheet music and will play the tunes at half speed or slower while we learn them.

EVERYONE IS INVITED!  If you play an instrument and would like to learn more about Celtic music OR if you want to come and learn some songs, OR if you simply want to come and listen, please do!!!

For more information, contact John Bunch (jbunch@benedictine.edu) , 403 Bishop

BC CELTIC MUSIC CLASS -

Wednesdays  FALL 2007

7:30-8:30 pm

A DISCOVERY PROJECT

Location - Benedictine College Haverty Center

Instructors - Dr. John Bunch and Kate Buchannan

Cost - $5.00 - This will be used to cover the expense of the CD and Music files which we will distribute after the first or second class.   Later in the session we could invite one or two guest instructors to come and teach us some tunes, if that happens, we may also ask for a fee to cover their gas expense, etc.).

The class will be taught in ensemble format mostly without the use of written music.  (The music will be available for home study but the tradition of Irish music is to teach the tunes by ear.)   A CD will be available with the tunes in ABC and PDF and MIDI formats.

Most of our attention will be on tunes rather than on singing songs although we will be learning a few songs here and there for the fun of it.

The plan is to cover the basic tune forms in two eight week cycles.  The schedule and tunes that we will cover appears below.  Some basic knowledge of your instrument is required.  Students who do not know how to play any instruments, however, can start with either whistle or bodhran.  Sources for music and instruments will be discussed in the early class sessions.

We will also introduce students to some of the heritage and lore of the tradition as well as the music.. (Perhaps we would bring CDs to listen to at the beginning of each class.)

The format of a typical class will be:

REVIEW last weeks tunes WITHOUT MUSIC if possible.

Walk through singing or lilting.

Play slowly phrase by phrase.

Play quickly.

Introduce the current week's  tune type (Polka, reel, jig, etc.), discuss tempo, rhythm, etc.

Introduce the new tunes (2 or 3 = 1 set)

Walk through the music where the instructor PLAYS and the students SING ALONG.

Ensemble will play slowly phrase by phrase

Ensemble will play the entire tune at a gentle speed with attention to phrasing and musical expression.
