Cante for Dancers workshop with Alfonso Cid
and guitarist Andrés Perches Lemons and assistant dancer Isabel del Día at Lotus Music and Dance Studios.
In this workshop students will get an introduction to flamenco cante with an emphasis on structure of the verses, phrasing and rhythm and application to flamenco dance and choreography. I'll put each style within its own historic context and development. I'll hand out plenty of printed material with the translation of the lyrics and the structure of the dances in each class.
If you want to strengthen your understanding of how to work with the cante this is an excellent opportunity. Yo do not need to sing in this workshop but bring your flamenco shoes because it is a "feet-on" instead of a hands-on experience.
Please, bring a recording device to take the class home with you.
The class plan will be:
Alegrías (12/02/09)
Tangos de Málaga (12/09/09)
Soleá (12/16/09)
When: Wednesdays starting this week, October 21st until December 16th (no class on Nov. 25th due to the Thanksgiving holiday).

Manolo Rivera is recognized as one of America's foremost flamenco dancers. A professional since the age of eight, he has circled the world as a soloist with the company of Jose Greco, and has performed with the Great Antonio. The Santa Fe reporter said, "He dances with such flair and personality, one might call him the "Nureyev of Flamenco."
Manolo is a highly personable teacher with great spontaneous energy and insight. A believer in "serious fun", he enjoys projecting different and often contradictory aspects of himself. He encourages this approach as a way of centering and presenting an honest dynamic performance. Manolo has the gift to liberate dancers.
Both as a guest artist and with his company, he has toured the Orient, South America, North America and Europe, performing in tablaos, nightclubs and concert halls. He has partnered and choreographed for Maria Benitez, Susana de Palma and Carlota Santana, as well as for television and opera. He was a principal dancer for many years with the New York City Opera. A master teacher in great demand for over 30 years, Manolo teaches at universities, flamenco festivals, and major dance studios across the U.S. and Canada. Recognized for his innovative choreography, he has received several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council for the Arts. After recently completing several successful workshops in Detroit, Manolo is excited about presenting his series of future workshops in New York City.
