TEACHER BIOGRAPHIES
"When a dancer comes onstage, he is not just a blank slate that the choreographer has written on. Behind him he has all the decisions he has made in life. . . . Each time, he has chosen, and in what he is onstage you see the result of those choices. You are looking at the person he is, the person who, at this point, he cannot help but be. . . . Exceptional dancers, in my experience, are also exceptional people, people with an attitude toward life, a kind of quest, and an internal quality. They know who they are, and they show this to you, willingly." - Mikhail Baryshnikov

ELENA ANDUJAR
(from zoominfo.com) Elena Andújar was born in Seville, where she grew up with flamenco as a way of life. She first trained and performed as a dancer, she partnered Antonio Canales on his 1990 tour to Japan with Ketama -but begun to be known as a cantaora after Joaquín Cortés invited her to join his company as a singer in Cibayi (1993) and Pasión Gitana (1994). Since then she has shown a rare ability to combine traditional cante flamenco with projects across the cutting edge of contemporary flamenco. Recent work, for example, has included a tour with Jorge Pardo's Jazz Flamenco All Stars, guest spots with the Vargas Blues Band, a cameo in a zarzuela in the Teatro Real, and lead singing role in the Utrecht Metropolitan Orchestra's homage to Lorca.

Elena brings to her work great lyrical power as well as the strong rhythmic sense of a dancer. She began her dance studies at the edge of ten, and graduated in Classical Spanish dance from Matilde Coral's academy in Triana (Seville), at the age of twenty-one. Her singing, a spontaneous gift, remained a largely private affair although others begin to spot her talent. In 1988 she contributed backing vocals to Pata Negra's groundbreaking album Blues de la Frontera and the following year she performed with Diego Carrasco.

Following her performances with Joaquín Cortés, her singing career began to take off both in Spain and abroad. She has worked extensively in both traditional tablaos and other Spanish live venues - La Trocha (Seville), Café de Chinitas, Casa Patas and Suristán (Madrid), Tablao de Carmen (Barcelona) and Zambra (Alicante)- and performs regularly abroad as solo artist. Occasionally she combines this with dance: in 1997 she took a cameo role as a flamenco dancer in the Taylor Hackford movie Devil's Advocate, partnering Al Pacino. The following year she appeared as one of the lead singers in filmmaker Mike Figgs' experimental documentary Flamenco Women (VPRO, Netherlands and Channel 4, UK). Her face is familiar to many others from photographer Richard Avedon's book An Autobiography, in which he included her portrait.

Elena has also continued developing her range, technique and power as a singer. In 1988 she took demanding leading roles in flamenco mass in Finland and the orchestral homage to Lorca in Utrecht. Alongside this, in her own live shows she began to develop reworked versions of traditional lyrics -chosen with a deep knowledge of flamenco's repertoire and also with great humour- and to incorporate rap influences in her own songs. Writing of these recent performances Angel Alvarez Caballero, El Pais's flamenco critic, described he as "one of the young figures that is establishing herself most solidly in women's cante".
