Galeria Eskalera
La vida en Santiago - 9:00 PM
Calle 70 between 59&57 Mérida Yucatan Mexico
Price: free

The Pretentious Festival @ the Brick Theatre
- Nihils
Written and performed by Trav S.D.  Downtown raconteur and iconoclast Trav S.D. steps out of character to star
as Nihils -- pretentious-most of the pretentious -- a relentless and hilarious send up of  performance art, poetry readings, experimental theater, and deconstructionism
(and a thousand other isms).  With punk and free jazz supplied by his band the Nihilistics. If you miss this show,
you're a part of the problem.

Feb 4th, 2006 8:00 PM
at the BOWERY POETRY Club NYC
(Bowery & Bleecker)
a unique evening with Greetings Aural Magazine

Greetings Aural Magazine #8

Saturday, February 4th at 8pm Greetings Magazine continues its gentle guerilla attack on the written word by
holding the next in its aural magazine series at the Bowery Poetry Club.  Scheduled to perform are
the rootsy-folksy-bluesey-grassy Jones Street Boys, the improvising turntablist Marina Rosenfeld,
and the coherent and still free saxophonist Blaise Siwula.  For poets there’s the sparse eloquence of John Clair
and the inside-out lines of Julian Poirier.   In the spirit of experimentation and collaboration, musicians and poets
will combine for performances.  As always we invite any and all to listen, enjoy, and submit for our next event
(to be held in spring 2006).

Greetings Magazine, published out of Brooklyn for the past five years, emphasizes the oral and collaborative nature
of the poem by shifting from the mindset of a magazine that publishes copy and occasionally has readings, to the mindset
of a reading series that secondarily documents readings with CD recordings and printed pages.  The magazine is the event
and the event is the magazine (this time issue #8).  All of which sounds as academic and dry as poetry readings themselves
can sometimes be.  With that said, we do the best we can to have an evening where you feel just as comfortable laughing at
what you don’t care for as you do hollering for what you want more of.  We aim to make it fun.  We also aim to make it feel
relaxed enough for newcomers to meet and mingle with the poets, musicians, editors, etc.

As always, patrons of the show on the 4th will receive a complimentary CD and magazine from the previous event at the
BPC, featuring the music and words of James Hoff, Steve Dalachinsky, Val Geffner, Eddie Berrigan, Rule of Thumb,
John Coletti and more.  The 4th’s event will itself be recorded and available at the next event in the series scheduled
for the spring of 2006 at the Bowery Poetry Club, which itself will be recorded.  And so on and so on.  Admission will be $8.

SSS : SIWULA-STOWE-SAGE TRIO
       [The Total-Improvisation Unit]

               with special guests:
Robyn Siwula viola & Bern Nix guitar

The newly formed trio of Blaise Siwula (reeds), Nobu Stowe (piano) and Ray Sage (drums)
explores a wholistic approach to fully improvised music.  Their style is best described as ‘total improvisation’
that requires the performer not only to experiment with 'sound textures' but also to spontaneously create 'songs'
(melodies with tonal harmonies).  The sound of the trio is reminiscent of the spontaneous melodicism of Keith Jarrett,
the avant energy of John Coltrane/Cecil Taylor and the stuructural cohesiveness of J.S. Bach with dashes of world music.
"Unexpected and promising melding of avant aggression and lyrical melodicism. An exciting Journey."
Jim DeJong – Jazz Institute of Chicago

Shows before 2001....................................................................................................................................................................................................
yes they did happen..................................
except that now I can't quite remember the sequences....
1984 there were a number with Bob Marsh in Detroit MI as a duet a trio and a Dance Company called RC 22.
We performed in places like the Artists Market on the Street in Greek Town and various outdoor fairs including the Riverfront on Wooward and Jefferson....and of ocourse the ISIS theater in Pontiac MI.
This lasted until 1989 when I moved first to Europe and then NYC were I've lived since. Upon arrival in NYC I attended the Saturday morning open music/dance sessions at PS21 on 1st Avenue and 9th. Hooked up with Amica Bunker (A sunday night series - strictly free improv) Attended and performed there ..first on East 3rd st at an underground record store. The series later moved to ABC No-Rio for about a year and then found themselves not welcome whereupon they moved to Jerome Coopers gallery on E. 9th St and then I lost track of what was going on with it until it reserfuaced at the new Knit on Leonard St.
But during all of that I did performances at the old knit with William Parker, Michael Evans, David First, William Hooker, The Amica Cobra group, The John McDonough Cobra group, Steve Swell, Evan Gallagher.....
Then there was CB's Gallery, and 10 other places in the same vicinity..most are gone...Amibibat, Alien Planetscapes, Dagaz Trio, more with William Hooker and Donald Miller and some with Thurston Moore/Lee Renaldo/Marc Ribot/Bern Nix/the Pink Noise Sax Quartet, Tomio Shareisi, Bob Lipman, Judy Dunaway (Balloon Ensemble) Ed Chang (Like Brownies) The Improvisors Collective (which later became the vision festival)
at Context Studios on Ave A...then there was La Mama Galleria ..the Rowe/Siwula/Miano trio performed and recorded there..the 1st cd.
Market Street Jazz happened around then also....Jackson Krall/Hal Onserund/Ken Simon and Me...rehearsed our tunes and improvesed ...nice...
Oh yes the Cecil Taylor Big Band Pythongas happened in the 90's for a couple years ...fun rehearsals...crazy shows with 50 musicians..blowing free.
Also Started working with Dom Minasi and John Bollinger around this time - Dialing Privileges...we did a cimp recording in 1998...the one and only...funny...but later did a number of Cadence cds........
more early 90's stuff: started going to Europe to perform..Germany Amsterdam...worked with Christoph Irmer from Wuppertal, Harri Sojstrom in Berlin, Kai Wolf Berlin, Christian Begemann Amsterdam (quite a few times here). Did a crazy musical in South Asia called Aladdin (a weird copyright hack on the Disney Aladdin logo) based on the Cole Porter rendition from the 50's....a rewritten libretto and songs. yikes ....6 weeks though in Manila/Bankok/Singapore and Hong Kong.

Then there was Lee Ellickson numerous gatherings of musicians that performed everywhere and anywhere...the UN Chapel, gardens, galleries, clubs, churches..with numerous props such as turkeys and hamsters...dancers...poets. his Angel Osanz improv opera.....these finally ended with the wonderful Lee Nagrin's La MAMA opus......something happened and Im not sure exactly what but a number of people were very unhappy with each other by the end. Ms Nagrin passed away and Mr Ellickson completely disappeared...something about running a film festival in Nigeria?????????????

So if you've gotten this far down the page you've realized that the formatting sort of blows...sorry about that....there is some more info further down the page from a wonderful weekend in Copenhagen Aug 2001 and a short stay in Hamburg. This was my first encounter with the amazing Ge Suk Yeo who lived in Hamburg with her husband Bernie....the Web Master for cappuccinonet.com. Strange how the world went to crap just a couple of weeks after that....but we did do a beautiful recording in Nov 2001 in my apartment just before she returned to Hamburg called Segue -Orange Bird & Pink Bat ( I guess I'm the bat)........
