The Obama Saga: A Requiem for Mayberry
I want my country back! I want my country back! From the Heart
of Dixie to the frozen tundra of Alaska to just north of the Rio Grande. Their voices sing out, actually it is more of a rabid
shout. But who am I to judge? But who am I to judge?
I am that American, that one American. Who represents many just
like me and some who are little different and some who are worlds apart. I do not want your America and I do not want my America.
I want our America. I want our America to be better than it was yesterday and I want it to remain a hell of a lot better than
it was 60 years ago or even 30 years ago. Even as I suffered through the injustices that our America said was fair. I had
hope, I lived hope. For I had seen how far our America had come in the span of just a few short years. My life and the life
of many others was so much better in 1981 than in 1971.
For those of us who lived on the fringes of society, not because
of our character, but for what we were seen as. Each decade from 1776 to 2009 offer a greater acceptance and a better way
of life. And now that our America has achieved an unparalleled level of fairness. There are those, the once privileged many,
who can not handle the truth. The truth that you will now have to compete openly for your greater piece of the pie. The wink
the nod the pretenses of fairness are now gone.
You cite the bogeyman of affirmative action, as a reason you want
your America back. What you can not see or will not see is that the bogeyman of affirmative action. Is an open paper trail.
When you feel an injustice has taken place you have the evidence and the judicial means to correct the injustice. Tell me
where was that evidence in the 40's and 50's and 60's. When the White woman, the Black woman, the Hispanic woman, the gay
or the lesbian and the Black man. Was denied a job or a promotion or the right to live in a better neighborhood. The evidence
was in the ether, that place where the wink and the nod lives.
For those of you calling for your America back. Mayberry is dead!
Let me say it again, Mayberry is dead! Instead of trying to breath life back into an era that was clearly unfair to far to
many people. You should look around and see that the human condition around you is so much better than it ever was. If you
can not, if you still call for your Mayberry. Then be prepared for what you will be perceived as. For when you call for your
era of prejudice and intolerance of people of color, of the gay and the lesbian. We can only view you as prejudice, bigoted
and homophobic.
You tell me that you are not those bad things and not are in favor
of those things. But when what you yearn for, can not be, without those bad things. Then how can we separate you from those
bad things. Guilt by association is a most unwelcome and cruel house guest, as far to many good men have found out. So do
everyone a favor and go D.A.B.D.A. on Mayberry. Find your favorite song of good bye and grab your gun. As you bury Mayberry, give it a 21 gun salute and let
your requiem play.
