David Sargent

Greetings,

As the Wolf Den Leader, I want to be available to share my last years experience with you.
Here is my kick off letter I sent last year, I updated the dates and location to make it current for this years Wolfs. If you have any questions, corrections or comments please reply. You will be working on achieving your Wolf Badge by following the Wolf trail in the Wolf Cub Scout Book.  I will send a list later of supplies I have available for your den to use in completing the Wolf book.  You should be looking forward to having a great time of learning and fun this year in your Den, scouts love the fun and exploration scouting gives. Along with the joy of completing achievements while doing their best.

The Wolfs well be meeting each Tuesday eve at 7:00pm to 8:30 PM. The first meeting will be Sept. 18, 2001 in the Old North church of SMCC. The last Tuesday of each month will be a Pack meeting. In Pack meetings the whole family is encouraged to come and see the awards ceremony and discuss upcoming activities. The Sept. 11  Den Meeting will be a Membership information night for new guest, please invite new boy to this meeting.

In your Den meetings you should start by reviewing the Bobcat trail 1 to 7. This is found on pages 17 to 36 in your Wolf book. Please review this section before your first meeting with your scout at home and signed off section 1 to 8 at the completion of each section on the Abel's Ok line. See the parent guide in the front of the Wolf book for the Do Your Best completion guide lines, page 9. Please have this done by Sept. 18 so your scout will receive His Bobcat badge at the Sept. 28 pack meeting.   Once you complete the  Bobcat trail notify me by Email,
or in writing, Give the achievements to me the week before the Pack meeting, so I can have the badges for you at the Pack meeting.
The Scout shop sells a rank achievements completion chart good for Wolfs and Bear, it is a great tool to keep track of the Scout achievements. The scouts like to study it and see how they are doing. Stop by Den 5- Bears and look at their chart.

In Oct. you should start the Wolf Trail in your book. There are 12 required Achievement. Some of these we will be completed in your Den meetings. Some will be required to be completed at home. This info will come later based on the groups choice of Den activities. You can find all my last years news letters at the Wolf Web page under The archives:. http://home.earthlink.net/~basargent/Wolf.htm  This include my suggestions on wolf achievements that should be done at home and in den meetings, feel free to make your own list.

You may want to start working on Making a collection, required Achievement 6 in the Wolf book. Some ideas for starting a Collection are: rocks, stamps, sea shells, coins, leafs, bugs and alike. About 6 or more items makes a  collection.

The last half of the Wolf book is Electives, The Arrow Point Trail, that are optional activities. The Den will work on some Electives after finishing the 12 required Wolf Achievements. A scout may work on the Electives at home at anytime. But, any arrow point awards achieved will be given after the scouts Wolf badge is awarded, most likely at the Blue and Gold pack meeting Feb.  26, 2002, the goal of wolfs scouts is to complete the Wolf badge by the Blue and Gold.

Other Patches:
The Office BSA policy is that District emblem at NOT to be displayed on Scout uniforms.
The Lucky Bawling District emblem is on the pocket of the some of ours scouts uniform shirt, this was done before I read the official BSA policy. Please do NOT put the  Lucky Bawling District emblem on you scout's uniform shirt.

You may put this on your Patch jacket or vest. Displaying your Patches: You may get a Patch Jacket or a Patch Vest.  I don't  feel there must be uniformity in the display of patches. These patches may not go on your scout uniform. (Scout uniforms require uniformity, only approved emblems and patches maybe display on the Cub Scout uniforms.)
You buy the vest or jacket yourself:

The official Red Scout Vest comes with display instructions, buy it at the scout shop.

Scout jackets should be red or blue,  the only thing displayed on the front is a BSA logo. See Tim or my jacket for logo.
The logo is bought at the scout shop. Patches are displayed on the back.  Red Jackets are sold at the scout shop and
come with the BSA Logo patch.  Sear sells (or did sell)  a nice blue jacket that looks like the red scout jacket.

Patches:   I will buy the patches and ask you to reimburse me for the actual cost.
Some patches will be given out at the end of the activity, others will be given later.
(patches are not official merit awards).

While at the scout shop, if your scout was a Tiger last year, feel free to get a Tiger Patch for your jacket or vest also.
They have a few Tiger Patches to pick from.

Best Regards, Dave
