Troop 373 Backpack  Trip

Backpack trip in our local foothills. Out of Chantry Flats, all Scouts are welcomed.
Back to Chantry Flats to Hoegee Campground all Scout welcome

Oder Scout can continue on to SpruceGrove Campground

Scouts were given a packing list for the outing this weekend.  Here are more details about the trip.

I will need RSVP of whether Scouts or Adults are going on the trip.  It is a backpacking trip NOT a car camp.  The hike will be from 
Chantry Flats to Hoegees, a 2 mile trip.

Start time 7:00am, ONC, Sierra Madre

Patrol Leaders will need to buy food for their patrol, lunch and breakfast.

  I will be buying the dinner which is why it is important I have final count by Thursday 9 pm.

Return 12:00pm, pick up at Chantry Flats.

Depart Sat.Oct. 20,  7am drop of at ONC

Back: Pick up Sunday at Noon at Chantry Flats

Hoegee is an easy trail, 2 miles one way

Cost $20.00 Sat.

RSVP by Tuesday before camp  to Scoutmaster

 Cooking gear, tents, cooking stoves, etc... will be provided by the troop.

What to bring:
At least 2 liters of water
10 essentials except matches and map
Sleeping bag and  pad
Trail snacks
Bowl/spork
Correct hiking shoes and extra socks.
External backpack frame or an internal frame is acceptable, and needed to properly carry all the gear.
Scouts will need to carry part of a tent and he may be given food or fuel carry also.

Cars parked at Chantry Flats (if you can find a spot, get there early to find one) need a US Forest Adventure Pass, you can buy it at sporting good stores.
Drop off do not need a pass.

Hoegee's Campground is North of Chantry Flats which is at the north end of Santa Anita Ave.

Hoegees Camp is located at an elevation of approximately 2,500 feet.
Chantry Flats is at 2,150 feet, but you dip to 1,800 feet at Roberts Camp in between if using the lower trail.
 
 
 

There are two trails to and from Hoegee :

1.5 miles Lower Winter Creek Trail

2 miles Upper Winter Creek trail, takes one North ( 0.2 miles) of the the camp, must drop back down the creek a short ways.

 Descend the paved trail 0.6 miles to Roberts Camp. After crossing the bridge at the bottom of the pavement, turn left on Lower Winter Creek Trail. Make your way along the creek past a few wilderness homes and concrete dams.

To get to the trailhead: Take the 210 east through Pasadena to Arcadia. Exit Santa Anita and head north. Go up the mountain for 5 miles until the road ends at Chantry Flats. Display your National Forest adventure pass and park your car in the lot.

Stream water (treat before using)

From 1907 to 1953 (when it burned down) Hoegees Camp served as a resort for hikers. Today Hoegees Camp offers vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. The fourteen campsites are first-come first-serve.
 

Hoegees Camp lies along Winter Creek in the canyon adjacent to Sturtevant Falls. Both trails begin from Chantry Flats. And while the hike to Hoegees Camp does not offer a waterfall, it does offer a 4.25-mile out-and-back hike through a lush canyon with 700 feet of elevation change. You may also continue on Upper Winter Creek Trail to return to Chantry Flats for a 4.85-mile loop with 1,000 feet of elevation change.
