Mark A. Bartsch

Until June of 2004, Mark was a graduate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the University of Michigan.  His graduate research focused on "audio content analysis," which included issues in music information retrieval, computer aided diagnosis for speech pathologies, and the study of the singing voice.  He has completed his thesis, Automatic Singer Identification in Polyphonic Music, along with all other requirements for his Ph.D. Mark was a member of the MusEn Project, and worked with Dr. Gregory H. Wakefield.

A description and demonstration of PESCE, one of the important components of his thesis research, is now available.

From Fall 2001 through Summer 2002, Mark developed a series of nine laboratories for EECS 206, a new introductory signals and systems course in the EECS department.  The laboratories are Matlab-based, and are intended to introduce sophomore-level undergraduates to real-world applications of signal processing and signal theory in general. A local copy of the student laboratory manual (PDF) is now available.  In August of 2003, Mark was named an Outstanding Graduate Student Staff Assistant for his work.

Mark received his Masters degree from the University of Michigan in April, 2002 and his Bachelors degree from the University of Dayton in May, 2000, both in electrical engineering.

Prior to his graduate studies, Mark worked at Qualia Computing, Inc. (now known as iCAD Systems Inc.) developing image processing and machine learning algorithms to improve the performance of the SecondLook computer-aided breast cancer detection system.

Mark served as the Publications Chair for the 2003 IEEE Workshop on Applications of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics. He has been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the IEEE Signal Processing Society since 1996.

Mark is currently employed by ATK Mission Research in Beavercreek, OH.
