The basic part of my teaching is an approach to body alignment called Balance taught at the
Balance Center in Palo Alto, CA. Balance helps us to understand the bone structure in the body
and its ability to support us. As we bring the bones into alignment, and especially as we allow the
spinal column to become a column of support the muscles begin to relax and in some cases
immediate relief from pain occurs. However, stretching within the guidelines of Balance is always
necessary to help bring the body more completely into comfort and relaxation.

Here is my out-of-Balance posture when I was in high school. Notice the huge inward curve in my lower back. This produces the extremely large outward curve in the mid-back area (thoracic). Notice how forward and slumped the shoulders are. Also, notice the arm looks pulled up into the torso. |
Here I am today. Although I will continue to become more balanced, my back is much straighter (there should be a natural arch between lumbar 4 and 5) and the vertebral column inside of me is supporting my body while I play. Notice the arm is hanging more freely and the shoulders are further away from the ears. |
