All that a University ... can do for us is still but what the first school began doing -- teach us to read. The true University of these days is a  Collection of Books.

Welcome to David Burkam's personal website!

Instead of the formality of my University of Michigan faculty websites (see Favorite Links above), this website is more a reflection of my personal interests and non-professional pursuits....

By day I am a faculty member at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, teaching statistics, quantitative research methods, writing, and the politics of education in both the Residential College and the School of Education.

After work, I retreat into a world of candlelight and Arts & Letters. An unashamed bibliophile, my passion and collection spill over into every room of my home: old books with personal histories, bumped corners, mysterious inscriptions, and curious bookplates. And when I'm lucky, tucked between the pages: a faded flower, a calling card, or a scrap of ribbon.

I also collect tarot decks and Victorian ephemera.

I'm now on Facebook...

It is not friendship merely which I feel for him, or it is friendship of the strongest kind. It is a heart-felt, a manly, a pure, deep, and fervent love. [Albert Dodd, 1837]
