America's First Doi Chaang Coffee House

Most Westerners (and many Asians) are unaware of Thailand's Doi Chaang, world-class coffee. With an office in Chiang Rai, Thailand, and one in Vancouver, Canada, this new company is about to explode onto the world-wide coffee scene! Growing beans farmed and hand-picked by the Akha hill tribe in the Golden Triangle region of Northern Thailand, Doi Chaang (which means "elephant mountain" in Thai) has all the right components for producing the world's best single-origin, organic coffee. The Doi Chaang Coffee Academy and headquarters are located high atop "elephant mountain", and the surrounding, rugged jungle-forest, is home to some of the richest soil and best weather on the planet (thus making it ideal for growing specialty coffee.) Going way beyond fair trade, Doi Chaang's Akha tribe are not only the farmers, but are also 50% partners in this new company! Years ago, the 8,000 fertile acres atop Doi Chaang were used to grow opium poppies, for at that time in history, opium production was one of the only ways for the Akha tribe to make a living for themselves. With today's continued efforts from Thailand's King and the amazing work done by Wicha Promyong (Thailand president of Doi Chaang Coffee) and John M. Darch (chairman of Doi Chaang Coffee, Canada) in organizing the Doi Chaang Akha farmers, the tribe now earns way more money growing and selling coffee than they ever did, growing and selling opium! This is a win-win situation for everyone. Coffee has now replaced illegal opium and business success has replaced poverty for the Akha tribe farmers. Not only is this a world-class coffee, Doi Chaang also displays an amazing business model that is truly geared for future success! Stanford University sophomore, James "Ming" Johnson has a vision and plan to open the first "flagship" Doi Chaang Coffee house in America (Palo Alto, CA). His ultimate goal is for Doi Chaang Coffee to become a house-hold name in the US.

...James ("Ming") meets with khun Wicha Promyong (Thailand president of Doi Chaang Coffee) in Chiang Rai's Doi Chaang Coffee house and at the Doi Chaang Coffee Academy, high in the mountains of Thailand's Golden Triangle.

The story of Doi Chaang Coffee is set in a small village located within the Northern Thailand region of the Golden Triangle. The single-origin coffee produced from this region is consistently rated as being among the finest coffee of any region in the world. My vision is to open multiple Doi Chaang coffee houses, the first of which being in Palo Alto, California, serving Doi Chaang Coffee, presenting each store as a fresh, foreign, unique and humanitarian entity within the maturing American specialty coffee climate.

Mission & Goals:

o Present Doi Chaang coffee in a designer decor theme of "rustic elegance", as a unique alternative to traditional Euro-centric coffee houses.

o Continue and further the successes of an already successful brand.

o Raise the awareness of Thai Coffee and promote support of the ethnic Thai Akha hill tribes.

o Present a brand new experience by introducing Americans to the world-leading quality of Doi Chaang coffee.

o Make the Palo Alto Doi Chaang coffee house popular and profitable within the first fiscal year.

o Expand Doi Chaang coffee houses to other locations in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as in Central and Southern California, pending the success of the Palo Alto store.

o Act as a catalyst and example to promote the fair and equal treatment of coffee farmers worldwide.

o Garner the support of students, faculty, and alumni of Stanford University and of the City of Palo Alto.
