Captain John Abercromby (1722-1758) was baptized 1 May 1722 at Alloa Parish, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, the fourth son of Alexander Abercromby (1675-1753) of Tullibody and Mary Duff (1680-1743). He was a younger brother of James Abercromby (1708-1775), the South Carolina attorney general. John began his military career 13 March 1741 when he was Cornet in Bruce’s 24th regiment; was Lieutenant in Bruce’s 24th on 2 May 1744; Lieutenant in the 1st Royal regiment of foot on 16 April 1746; Captain in 1st regiment 2 February 1757 and in this capacity was killed at Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, Canada in July 1758 while fighting the French there. He never married.
