Bald Head Island, NC is located where the mouth
of the mighty Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic
Ocean. At the southeastern point of North Carolina, Bald Head
island juts out into the Atlantic 3 miles.
Bald
Head Island is a fisherman’ dream and is home to some of the best fishing
on the East Coast. The uniqueness of the island and surrounding waters
offer exciting options for visiting anglers. Try fly fishing for red drum
at Frying Pan Shoals. Or make a 60-mile run to the blue waters of the gulf stream
for tuna, wahoo, billfish and king mackerel.
Drift in the Cape Fear Channel and fish for king mackerel. Bass
fish in the lagoons around the golf course. Kayak/canoe in the
marsh and try your luck. Or surf-fish along the shore and hook red
drum, pompano, bluefish, flounder and speckled trout.
Surf fishing is "hot" beginning in
April. At this time East beach becomes a great prospect for catching red drum, pompano and bluefish while West beach and the marina are a favorite spot to
catch flounder, blue fish and red drum.
During the Fall, King Mackerel is at its peak season. Hundreds of fishing
competitors join in to win the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament in October.
