History   The Whetstone Committee originally formed in the summer of 2005 to fight the proposed request to re-zone 12.6 acres from Rural (RU-4) to Light Industry.  This property is located on the North side of Highway 82, just west of Appaloosa Place.  Typical Light Industry uses include uses were metal fabrication, mini-storage, plant nursery, and lumber yard, all of which would impact the area with increased traffic, noise, and water consumption.  This re-zoning request was withdrawn just prior to the Planning and Zoning Commission vote on Sept 14, 2005.  While our efforts were successful, continued efforts are needed for future zoning and development requests.

Purpose   Our focus now is to create a Comprehensive Plan with citizen input and guidance from the Cochise County Planning and Zoning Department (PNZ).  Whetstone Committee is scheduled to meet with PNZ in January 2006.  The purpose of our committee is to create a draft of what we (Whetstone) would like in our Comprehensive Plan.  In some instances, comprehensive plans have been drafted by the PNZ in the absence of community input due to severe time contraints.  While we applaud the efforts to ensure these communities have a plan, the residents of Whetstone would like to provide the detail and direction in our own comprehensive plan.

What is a Comprehensive Plan? Community and area plans are amendments to the County Comprehensive Plan that address the future growth of a specific community or region of the County.  More information can be obtained from our "Links" or "Documents" pages or select "Relevant Documents" from the Infrastructure link below.
