Margaret Young
Berry passed away on November 5, 2006. On her birthday, July 8,
a "remembrance of her life" was celebrated with an open
house at Kala Point, a home she shared with her husband of 45 years,
Gordon Berry. Max Peterson and Craig Kurtz class of 60 and Jinx
Vandiver Williams and Paula Monsarrat Steele class of 61 attended.
We were very fortunate to have known and been taught by this very
exceptional woman. She was born in Walnut Grove, Mississippi and
lived in a pre-Civil War home on a small cotton farm. She attended
East Central Junior College from 1943 to 1945 and in 1946 graduated
from Mississippi College. At age 19 she was teaching high school
in West Point, Mississippi. She was the recipient of a Ford Foundation
Fellowship in 1953 to Columbia University where she earned her Master's
degree.

She came to JHS in 1959 to open the
school and there met Mr. Berry. On August 6, l961 she and Mr. Berry
were married and in 1962 they moved to Bremerton, Washington. She
became the Director of Federal Projects and Personnel Director of
the Bremerton School District and in 1978 she was named Superintendent
of the Port Townsend School District. She holds the distinction
of being the first female K-12 Superintendent in the State of Washington.
Margaret Young Berry was indeed a remarkable woman and judging
from the people who spoke at the open house, it would be difficult
to find a person whose life was not better for having know "Miss
Young" and she is much loved and leaves a remarkable legacy.

Springtime
Washington DC
for Reunion 2006
Stan Palowski hosted
our All-Class Reunion in the Spring of 2006.It was 4 fun days in
our nation's capital. Lots of walking and the Cherry Blossoms were
wonderful --like big pink umbrellas. Thanks Stan
The location could not have been more perfect for
our stay the last weekend of March [30 Mar 06 - 2 Apr 06], Doubletree
in Crystal City, just across the Patomac from Washington DC and
those magnificant Cherry trees.
Memphis 2009 is our next gathering of the Falcon Flock.
(See Reunion Page).
