Restaurant

Restaurant

Vintage 1920. Another one of the brick buildings and located central to miners access at mine 30, mine 31, main office complex, and the surface employees of the warehouse and repair shop. There always was a waiting line during the lunch hour and at shift changes. Built straddling 'Looney Creek' the miners could stop in to eat before and after their work shift. The miner could also stop in to have their dinner pails packed with food of their choice for their lunch or dinner. The specialty of this restaurant was a 'foot long' hot dog with chili. Also on the menu was a delicious grilled ham/egg sandwich and large white ceramic mugs of hot coffee. The busy times were during shift changes. The counter was U-shaped with fixed seats; however, was separated by a wall partition and whites were served on one side and blacks on the other. This was a segarated area and all employees both black and white had equal access to the same menu.
