A Past Coal Mining Operation Of the U S Steel Corporation
The town of Lynch is known for its uniqueness of a bygone era captive coal
mining operation. Located in the Appalachian mountainous region where Big Black
Mountain the highest peak in Kentucky, 4145 feet above sea level; Kentucky
highway 160 east allows one to travel "The Trail of The Lonesome Pine" into
southwestern Virginia where one day "Hands Across the Mountain" will greet the
towns Inman, Appalachia, Big Stone Gap and Norton in the state of Virginia.
This U S Geological Survey Bench Mark location is embedded in a huge
native stone approximately fifty feet to the left of a fire watch tower near the
summit of Black Mountain.
