The
atlatl was used at different times in different places in the world, but
generally, atlatl technology is thought to have developed out of the need to
replace the thrusting stick and was truly the precursor to the bow and arrow.
In what is now Europe the atlatl was developed at least 19,000 years
ago. Beautiful atlatl artifacts of carved antler and ivory have been
found in the caves of southern Europe. As
expansion took place, migrations to the Western Hemisphere are believed to have
occurred around 13,000 years ago and most likely the technology of the atlatl
was carried along with those who came. Others
who migrated to the Australian continent during an ice age event are believed
to have developed the atlatl (woomera) approximately 10,000 years ago. A lot
of the atlatl timeline is conjecture due to the fact that the atlatl and spear
were primarily made of perishable materials and did not survive the ages.
Remnant artifacts such as points, spurs, bannerstones, handles, etc.
lead us to make our conclusions. Below
are links to various timelines and theories of migration to the Americas.
