When man invented the atlatl,
mega-fauna, such as mammoths, mastodons, and ancient bison, roamed the earth.
With the use of the atlatl, man became a much more successful hunter; even to
the extent that some scientists believe that hunting with the atlatl provided
the means for the extinction of many of these large animals.
Even after the mega-fauna disappeared, man continued to use a
"trimmed down" version of the atlatl and spear to hunt smaller game
until a more efficient weapon was devised, the bow and arrow. The Use of the Atlatl on Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan Ecological Role of Human Hunting Exploring Mammoth Remains in New Mexico Grades 4 to 6 Grades 7 to 9 Grades 10 to Adult Mammoth Quiz Quiz Answers |
