An atlatl is a primitive hunting tool or weapon used to cast spears from a distance.  The term atlatl, which is commonly used in the Western Hemisphere, is an Aztec-derived word meaning spear-thrower; however, atlatls were used throughout the world.  While the basic principle of the atlatl was the same, different cultures developed distinct styles of atlatls.  Click the four different places on the map, and you will see an atlatl from that particular part of the world.  Keep in mind that each culture had their word for spear-thower!
