Admiral
Chegwidden's office
The
Admiral hung up his phone and shook his head.
He had finally gotten everything together for this quote, unquote mission
that the Secretary of the Navy insisted he take. There was only one more thing for him to do, involve his
coconspirator.
“Tiner,
get me Colonel MacKenzie in here. Now,”
he said over the intercom.
“Aye, aye,
Sir,” came the quick response. Moments
later, there was a knock on the door.
“Reporting
as ordered, Sir.”
“Come in
and close the hatch.” Mac did as
ordered, wondering what was going on.
“Secretary
Sheffield has a, a job, for us,” he said sarcastically as he leaned against the
front of his desk. “Have a seat. Unfortunately, he doesn't think that we
should discuss the case here. The man
had the nerve to suggest that the walls have ears.”
“He said
that?” Mac asked in amazement.
“He
doesn't know any better, yet. This case
is a rather delicate issue and it needs to be handled as such. We need to go to Fredericksburg today and
that is about all that I can explain here.
He said that we can talk about it on the way.”
“Okay. When do we leave?”
“I'm going
to leave for a meeting at the Pentagon in about five minutes then I'll be done
in about an hour and a half. If you
have anything on your desk that you can finish up that would be great. Especially if you have anything on your desk
that might require leaving the office all afternoon. Sheffield doesn't want anyone to know what is happening, so he
suggested that I be in meetings all day and you working on a case.”
“Very
good, Sir. Where do you want to meet?”
“My house
at noon. By the way, it's civilian
dress.”
“Alright. I'll see you there, Sir.”
1200 Noon
Admiral
Chegwidden's House
Mac
arrived at the Admiral's house just moments after him. She popped her trunk then pulled out her
emergency bag for her civvies before meeting him on the porch as he unlocked
his door.
“Feel free
to change in the bathroom in the hall,” the Admiral suggested as he continued
to his bedroom.
Mac
changed quickly and soon walked out of the bedroom. She opened the door and found a hanger on the doorknob. She knew that the Admiral had put it there
for her uniform. By the time she had
hung her uniform, he stepped out of his bedroom.
“I know
this is not explaining the whole thing but this is somewhat an undercover
assignment. It's nothing dangerous,
that's why I didn't say anything before.
Originally, Sheffield was going to ask Rabb to do this but he decided
that Rabb might not be the most discrete about this.”
“About
what, Sir?”
“About
going undercover as a married couple.”
“Married?”
“Yeah. I'll explain in detail on the trip but we
are to be a married civilian couple going for some marriage counseling. We actually have our 'therapy session' at
1400 in Fredericksburg.”
“We are
going to be civilians? I only have my
trench coat.”
“That's
okay. I think Francesca left a coat or
two in the hall closet, help yourself to anything in there. I'll hang up your uniform in my closet. Once you pick one out, follow me.”
The
Admiral took her uniform and went into his bedroom. Mac looked into the closet and saw several jackets and
coats. She looked through them and she
knew that neither of Francesca's would be appropriate. One was a St. John's jacket and the other
was an exquisite long black coat. She
couldn’t resist a peek at the label, Piazza Sempione. Mac would have loved to wear that coat but even with her limited
knowledge of Italian designers, she knew this was an extremely expensive piece
of clothing. Mac reluctantly put
Francesca’s jackets back in the closet and pulled out one jacket she knew would
be okay. Mac walked into the Admiral’s
bedroom and watched as he pulled out a box from his dresser.
“I’ll need
your ring, Sarah,” he said without turning around.
“Excuse
me, Sir?”
“I’m AJ
for this case. You certainly can’t be
calling your husband ‘sir’ unless we want to give these people an interesting
impression,” he said with a smile.
“Ok,
AJ. You need my ring?” she asked.
“Yes. We have to be civilians with no ties to the
military, so you need to remove your ring,” he explained as he pulled off his
Academy ring. He took her ring and opened
the box he was holding. “And since we
are to be married, I figure my bride needs a wedding ring.”
“That’s
not necessary.”
“Yes it
is. I don't want anyone to think that I
can't afford a ring for you. Here,
these were my mother's. She gave them to
me so I could give them to Francesca and I just never have.”
Mac looked
through the small box and finally decided on a ring she liked. It was a simple emerald pear cut stone with
two tiny flanking diamonds. She also
pulled out a plain gold band to wear before handing the box back to AJ. He reached in and pulled out the matching
men's band when he looked at the rings she picked.
“That was
my mother's engagement ring,” he stated.
“Oh, I'll
pick something else.”
“No. That's fine. It will just sit here, forgotten, if you don't wear it.”
Mac looked
at him and saw that he didn't mind her wearing them so she put the band on then
the emerald. They fit her
perfectly. AJ slipped on his band and
then he finally noticed the jacket she picked.
“You're going
to wear my old leather jacket? What
about Francesca's?”
“They are
too nice to wear to therapy and they don't go with this,” she said referring to
her black jeans and turtleneck. “Is
that okay?”
“Sure. I'll just wear my old denim jacket,” he said
reaching back into his closet. Mac
noticed for the first time that AJ was wearing a white shirt, well worn jeans
and cowboys boots. “Did you manage to
grab something for lunch yet, Sarah?”
“No. I was thinking that we could just grab
something on the way down, if that's okay?” she asked as they walked to the
garage.
“Sure. I guess we can stop and get you some Beltway
burgers,” he said with a smile as he took the jacket from her hands to help her
into it. “With two conditions only.”
“What's
that?”
“One, no
eating in the car, and two. Let me buy
you a real dinner after this is over with.”
“You don't
have to.”
“Sarah. I didn't even realize that it was
Valentine's Day today so it's the least I can do,” he said as he opened the
door to the garage.
“Well,
it's not like I had plans anyway, Sir.
AJ,” she said before she got a look in the garage. “You have a Mustang?”
“No, I
borrowed it from a friend who owed me a favor.
It doesn’t have any military stickers on it so it’s better to drive than
either of ours. I'll pull the Mustang
out if you don't mind pulling yours in.
Just in case anyone drives over.”
“Sure, not
a problem.”
AJ pulled
out the Mustang put it in park and waited for Sarah to pull her car into the
garage. He walked to the garage door,
pulled it down once she stepped outside, then went to open her car door. Soon they were on their way and stopped at
the closest fast food place. Once they
finished eating and they were back on the road, AJ explained the entire case.
"We
are going to meet with a Doctor Hunter.
He has two degrees, one in computer programming and the other in
psychology. It seems that he discovered
a way to put his degrees together. He
created a program that tracks couples and any problems that they had. Somehow he came up with a virtual reality
program of some sort.”
“Bud would
love this.”
“True, but
he would also be so excited about this it would be difficult for him to keep
quiet about it.”
“Good
point. What does this computer program
have to do with JAG?”
“It seems
that Doctor Hunter wants to sell or even give the program to the Navy.”
“He wants
to 'give' it to the Navy? Why?”
“He
believes that this program could improve morale, homesickness, and even cut
down on extramarital affairs.”
“That's
saying a lot. How is it supposed to
work?”
“I'm not
sure. That part wasn't explained to
me. Sheffield said that it would all be
explained when we got there.”
“Okay. So why are we going to couples therapy,
hubby?”
He looked
at her startled for a moment before laughing.
“I guess
that we have problems with my age,” he said too casually as he looked away.
“What's
wrong with your age, AJ?” she asked making sure that she used his name, not his
rank.
This time
he looked shocked and not just surprised.
“Sarah,
I'm quite a few years older than you.”
“I've
noticed. So?”
Once again
he looked surprised before he spoke.
“Well, I guess that will be why we are going then.”
They fell
silent for a while and soon they were pulling off I-95 onto Route 3. AJ drove into downtown Fredericksburg then
stopped at a non-descript building just off Princess Ann Street.
They walk into the doctor's
office then sit and wait for Doctor Hunter to come and get them. Staying true to their cover, they both were
silent. AJ was thinking about what Mac,
no Sarah, had said about their age difference.
Could it really not matter to her?
He mentally sighed, knowing that there was more between them than their
age difference. Before AJ could get too
lost in thought, he noticed a man walk into the waiting room. He was a short man in his early
fifties. He was wearing a lab coat over
his blue shirt and khaki pants. He
spotted AJ and Sarah and called out their names.
"AJ, Sarah? I'm Doctor Jeremy Hunter. Would you like to step back into my office
and we can talk about what is bothering you?"
They both stood up and, always
the gentleman, AJ let Sarah lead the way.
Soon they were settled into Doctor Hunter's office.
“May I take your coats?” They both shed their jackets then sat down
on the leather couch.
“So, if you can tell me a little
bit about yourselves we can get the prelimaries done before we go to the lab to
use the computers.”
They were both happy that they
had talked about this on the trip down.
“AJ thinks our age is a
problem,” she said before he could speak.
“Why would you say that?” the
doctor asked.
“Because he keeps saying how
much older he is than me. I keep
telling him that it's not important to me but he just doesn't listen.”
“Okay. AJ tell me a little about
your relationship.”
“We've known each other for
about 8 years now. I've been attracted
to her since the day I met her but I don't stand a chance in the long run,” he
said with a touch of sadness.
“Why is that?”
“There's another man.” Sarah gasped. “A younger one.”
“That's not true. He's just my friend, AJ. That's all.
I promise,” Sarah said honestly as she stared into his eyes and
unthinkingly reached out to touch his hand.
He didn't realize it but he clasped her hand in his, holding tightly.
Doctor Hunter sat there a moment
silent before speaking.
“Okay. This seems to be simple miscommunication. If you two will follow me into my lab, we
can finish this up and let you two have the rest of your Valentine's Day to
yourselves.”
They stood up then followed the
doctor into the lab attached to his office.
He shut the door then apologized.
“I'm sorry about that. I know that my lab is soundproofed but I'm
not sure about my office.”
“That's okay,” AJ said. “At
least we came prepared. So what is this
thing you have to show us?”
“Let me start at the
beginning. I was in the Navy a long
time ago. I had never been away from home and I was terribly homesick. I did my job but I didn't put my heart into
it. My time was finally up so I left
and went to school to get more computer training. I also discovered psychology and in my spare time, I created a
program that tracks couples problems.”
“And now you want to sell this
program to the Navy?” asked Sarah.
“Not exactly. I took this program and then created a virtual
reality system.”
“How can that help the Navy?”
asked AJ.
“By putting on this suit and
helmet a person can relive any memory or live out a fantasy.”
“You're kidding?” asked AJ
incredously.
“Not at all. Just image a recruit, away from home for the
first time like I was, with this, they could be able to go home for a few
minutes even if they can't have leave.
So if a recruit can 'go home' for a short visit when they are deployed,
just imagine how much morale will improve.”
“If it works,” AJ said skeptically. “Sheffield also said you claimed this will
cut out affairs. How?”
“If a sailor can just use this,
he or she can virtually be with a loved one, so then why have an affair while
on shore leave? Or worse, an affair with someone in the same chain of command.”
“But what about the spouses at
home? Would you really want to know
that your spouse is busy having cyber sex and that it's endorsed and encouraged
by the Navy?” Mac asked.
“Psychologists have for years
said that fantasies are a healthy part of a loving relationship. The only difference with this is that it
feels far more real.”
They talk about the details of
the program for quite some time. Dr. Hunter had to leave and talk with
another couple so he left Sarah and AJ to review all his reports. Sarah
commented that she wondered how the Doctor can just give this program away if
he worked for a practice. She remembered how a lot of government people
would create something and it would belong to the government. She also knew
that a lot of civilian companies use that to protect themselves against
espionage. He must have worked out something with that already.
“I think
that this is all we can do until Dr. Hunter gets back.”
“He said
he would be back at 4:30 so he should be here anytime,” Sarah stated. “I have a question for you, AJ.”
“What’s
that?”
“Why did
we get picked for this? Not that I mind
certainly but I am curious.”
“The
SecNav was going to pick Rabb but he decided that he would probably open his
big mouth and blab to others or flat out say he was Navy.” Sarah smiled. “His words, not mine. He
called me last night and told me he thought I should go instead and pick
someone to go with me. Since our cover
was a married couple, you pretty much were the default,” he said with a smile.
“By
default?” she asked amused.
“I figured
it would be enough of a stretch with our age difference, imagine what
people would say if I brought Harriet or Manetti? They would say I was robbing the cradle.”
She
frowned at him then said, “How about Meredith?
I’m sure she would have been happy to help you.”
“True, and
I would have except for three reasons.
First, the SecNav didn’t want any civilians involved. Next, I was afraid she might take our cover
the wrong way and three, we aren’t seeing each other any longer.”
Before
Sarah could say anything about that, Dr. Hunter returned.
“I’m sorry
it took me so long. Have you reviewed
my papers?”
“Yes. It certainly looks promising.
Just one thing, can we test this contraption?” AJ asked.
“Sure. Who wants to try?
AJ? Sarah?”
“Hell no,” stated AJ.
“I guess that would be me,”
Sarah said. “What do I need to do?”
“Eventually, I would like to
have even more electrodes but right now all I have is 52. You’ll need to change into this jumpsuit, if
you don’t mind. You can change behind
the screen right there.”
A few minutes later Sarah
reappeared wearing a skintight black cat suit with electrodes sewn on in
strategic places and wired running everywhere.
She didn’t meet AJ’s eyes as she was connected to the system. She put on gloves and then a helmet with a
view screen on it. By the time she was
finished there were electrodes and wires everywhere, specially her head, groin
and breasts.
AJ looked
at Sarah then back at Dr. Hunter.
"Hope this doesn't offend you but I don't believe that this thing
works like you say. It sounds too much
like something out of science fiction!
Sarah, we’re wasting our time."
“AJ, the
SecNav gave us this personally to investigate.
We are the only ones to decide if this is real or a hoax. I know the Navy can’t afford to spend any
money to waste so it’s up to us to find out.
And even if Dr. Hunter donates this to the Navy, we can’t afford the bad
publicity if this falls through.”
“I guess,”
he said.
“Also the
Navy can spend the time and money on more worthwhile projects if this one is a
fake.”
AJ sighed
then said, "You're right. Ok. Let's get it over with. Sarah, are you ready?"
“As I’ll
ever be, I guess. What do I need to
do?”
“Just
relax, clear your mind, and think of a favorite fantasy or past experience you
would like to relive. That's it.”
AJ looked
at him and "That's it? That's all she has to do? Just think of a dream or
an experience in the past? And this contraption will do its thing?"
The
scientist nodded his head. “Yes. This taps into the cerebral cortex and
senses the neurotransmitters-“
“English,
please,” AJ interrupted.
“I’m
sorry. Basically, this taps into the
brain and sees what she's dreaming about, and then turns it into a Virtual Reality
experience.”
“Sarah,
are you sure you don’t mind a machine messing with your brain?”
“There's
safeguards built into the device, so no physical harm will come to her. I’ve tried it myself several times, and I
have not been hurt mentally or in any other way. There is a bar in front of you
or you can sit if you worry about your balance, which is the worst thing. But it's up to you, Sarah. If you don't want to do it, it's ok. I’m sure you could just use my observations
and notes in your investigation.”
AJ turned
to Sarah with a raised eyebrow, “We’re here already AJ. We might as well. Go ahead,” she said to Dr. Hunter.
“Okay,
just think of a something you want to experience and in a moment it should
appear on your screen.”
“Oh my,”
she said when she saw a living room appear before her.
“What’s
wrong? What do you see?” asked a
concerned AJ.
“I’m fine
and I see a living room.”
What Sarah
didn’t say was that she saw his living room and not hers. She was actually standing in the middle of
his living room. Watching AJ as a
matter of fact. He was standing by his
stereo looking through his CD collection.
Since this was just a fantasy, Sarah looked her fill, starting at his
boots. The boots surprised her and she
really wanted to know the story behind them.
Leisurely looking her way up, she took note of his muscled legs in
well-worn denim. She then let her eyes
wander across his broad shoulders then traveled up to his deliciously bald
head. He finally selected a CD, dropped
it in the player then turned to look at her.
“What?”
“Just
enjoying the scenery,” she said with a smile.
“So you
like the candles?” he asked referring to the scented candles all around the
room.
“I wasn’t
talking about the candles,” she said as Tony Bennet began to sing as he walked
closer to her.
AJ held
out his arms, Sarah stepped into them, and they started to dance. She wrapped
her arms around his shoulders and let her fingers tease the tightly cropped
hair as he pulled her closer. At first,
his hands were on her hips and they were dancing very close together. AJ closed
his eyes, and ran his hands up and down her back as they continued to
dance. When the song ended, they broke
apart, and just stood there staring at each other for a few moments.
AJ raised
his hand to Sarah's face and ran his finger slowly down her cheek, and across
her lips all while never taking his eyes from hers. Sarah swallowed hard,
opened her mouth and latched onto AJ's finger, gently sucking on it. AJ let out a gasp causing her to smile as
she released his finger. AJ reached
out, grabbed Sarah, and kissed her passionately. Sarah groaned, ran her hands
underneath his sweater and caressed his bare back, causing him to groan. AJ
lifted his head, grabbed the hem of Sarah’s shirt and yanked it over her
head. AJ groaned again when he saw that
she had no bra on. He dropped her shirt
on the floor then reached out and cupped her breasts. He then looked into her
eyes, as he lowered his head and sucked a nipple into his mouth.
AJ
suddenly grabbed her arms, lightly shook her, and called her name. She reached up and touched him on the cheek
when suddenly her vision changed. AJ
was still in front of her but she was once again standing in the lab instead of
his living room. Sarah’s gloved hand
was on his cheek and he looked very concerned.
“Sarah? Are you okay?” She simply nodded as she pulled her hand back. “Are you in pain?”
“No.”
Sarah whispered.
“No? But
why then are you panting and breathless? Are you sure you didn't feel
anything?” he asked as he finally let her go.
“Oh, I
felt something alright, felt a lot as a matter of fact, but not pain, at least
not the bad kind you're thinking about,” she said as she smiled. AJ looked at
Dr. Hunter confused but the scientist was beaming.
“Sarah,
what the HELL are you talking about? If you didn't feel pain, what did you
feel?” AJ snapped.
Sarah
shrugged her shoulders, “Like I said, a lot. Whatever I was supposed to feel in
this Virtual experience, I felt for real. For instance, when my virtual self was
happy in this virtual reality, I actually felt happy in real life.”
“So it's
for real? This sci-fi contraption really works?”
“Oh yes.
It worked so well, after a few minutes, I forgot it wasn't real, that it was
just a Virtual experience. You gotta try it!”
“Ok, guess
I'll try it,” he sighed. “If you
survived it, I'm sure I will too. One question though, why were you dancing?
And what was that action you made with your mouth?”
“Y-Y-Y-You
saw that?” she stuttered and blushed.
AJ nodded.
Not noticing
her nervousness, Dr. Hunter spoke up, “Whatever you're doing in the virtual
reality experience, you're also acting it out in Real life, so anybody who's
around you at the time, will witness your actions.”
Sarah
looked so embarrassed. “I think we got
what we need for the report. Do you
mind if we leave now, AJ?”
“Excuse
me? I thought you said I should try it myself,” AJ said as he lifted an eyebrow
as she muttered something. AJ grinned
and said, “So that's what I'll do, try it. Sorry, but we aren't leaving until
I'm done.”
AJ walked
over to the screen and changed into a suit that was there before returning to
pick up the gloves.
“If only I
could have your experience, Sarah, it looked fun.” Sarah just stood there, staring at her feet. AJ grinned again,
then turned to the scientist and told him that he was ready to try it. The
scientist helped him connect all the wires and cables to the central computer
as Sarah slipped behind the screen and changed back into her clothes. Once he was done, he handed AJ the
helmet.
“I just
have to think of a favorite fantasy or experience I had? That's all?” AJ asked
as he began to pull the helmet on. The scientist nodded. AJ winked at Sarah as
she returned and said, “Still wish I could experience Sarah's it looked
...um...interesting. More interesting than anything I could come up with.” Sarah blushed and looked away. AJ grinned
and started pushing the helmet all the way on. But before he got it completely
on, the scientist leaned toward him and interrupted.
“You can
experience what she did if you would like.
The computer records and stores everything. That way the user can alter it as they like and re-experience
them over and over again.”
AJ looked
shocked said, “You mean to tell me, that Sarah's fantasy was saved? I really
can experience it?”
“As long
as it’s okay with her.”
Mac stared
back shocked let out a sigh and then said, “Go ahead. After all, it IS just a
fantasy.”
“Are you
sure, Sarah? I don’t want to intrude on
your privacy.”
“It’s okay,
AJ. I trust you.”
AJ nodded,
smiled at her, then turned around.
“Play it back, Doc.” He then put
the helmet on.
Sarah and
Dr. Hunter watched as a look of surprise crossed over AJ’s face.
“So,
Sarah. Was your fantasy about AJ?”
“Why would
you think that?
“When I
said that he could experience your fantasy and you seemed both nervous and
excited. That kind of tipped me off.”
“Yes, it
is about AJ. That’s why I was hesitant
at first.”
“Then why
did you let him?” he asked softly.
“I’m tired
of pretending,” she sighed. “Maybe it’s
time to let AJ know how I feel about him.
“I
understand. It’s a difficult thing to
tell someone how you feel about them.”
Just then
AJ stopped, took off the helmet, and stared wide eyed at Sarah, while panting
heavily. Sarah stared back worriedly
until she unthinkingly glanced down and noticed his erection. She then smiled
at him as AJ gasped.
“Your
fantasy was about me? About us together?”
Mac swallowed and nodded her head.
AJ kept staring at her until he was breathing normally again.
“How
long?”
“How long
what?”
“How long
have you felt this way about me?”
“A long
time,” she whispered. “So long, I’ve
forgotten exactly when I started feeling that way.” AJ looked dazed and he shook his head. Sarah asked, “Sir? AJ,
are you ok?” She met his eyes once
again. “Don't worry, AJ. I know it can’t be more than a fantasy.”
“I'm fine.
More than fine,” he said touched her cheek.
“But you’re wrong.”
“What do
you mean?” she asked confused.
“We’ll
talk about this later, Sarah.”
Dr. Hunter
then helped AJ disconnect from the system then AJ slipped back behind the
screen and changed back into his clothes.
“Thanks
for the enlightening time, Doc. I’m
sure that the SecNav will be in touch with you soon.”
“Good bye,
you two. Enjoy dinner,” he said as he
turned his attention back to his computer.
After
saying goodbye to him, AJ and Sarah walked out of the room heading toward the
entrance. They walked a short way then
AJ pulled her into an empty room.
“Sarah, I
can’t wait. We need to talk now.” Sarah swallowed hard but nodded. AJ walked over to her and stopped a little
bit in front of her. “Do you really want to do this?”
“Oh yeah.
I never wanted anything as much as I want this to become real.”
“I feel
the same,” AJ smiled. “And that if you
can be patient I’ll find a way to make it happen.”
“I can be
very patient, AJ,” she smiled back at him.
“You can have all the time you need.”
“That's my
girl,” AJ said as he hugged her close.
“I need something to hold me over.”
“For
what?” she smiled.
“Until the
day when we could be together as we were in your fantasy,” he leaned down and
finally kissed her.
They walk out of the building,
trying to keep in character, but this time they were a couple that were much
happier and more at ease with each other. It wasn't difficult for them to
act this way. They were even holding hands.
“What did Dr. Hunter mean about
dinner?”
“His date canceled on him so he
offered us his reservations,” he said as he dropped her hand and opened the car
door for her.
“That was nice of him,” she said
as she climbed into the car. “Will this
be okay to wear?”
“I guess so. Dr. Hunter said that it was a nice Italian
place but people show up in jeans all the time.”
“The reservations are in about
an hour. How about we drive to the
restaurant then take a walk?”
“Sounds good.”
They drove to the restaurant,
parked then walked down William Street then decided to turn right on Caroline
Street to some of the little shops that dotted the historic area. They
mostly were window-shopping until Sarah spotted a store called Irish
Eyes. They decided to go inside. They saw crystal, china and even
foods imported from Ireland. Further into the store, they saw the
clothing. Sarah eyed the black watch cape but knew that she wouldn't have
a chance to wear it so she didn't say anything about it.
AJ finally commented on the time
and they decided that they really should get back to the restaurant.
Sarah noticed the jewelry then. AJ stood behind her off a little to one
side, smiling gently as she raved over the claddagh rings and the shamrock pins
with real emeralds. AJ looked down into the case and saw a pair of
earrings that he couldn't resist looking at closer. He watched as Sarah walked
further up the case and he slipped out his credit card and quietly pointed to
the ones he wanted.
The sales lady, looked at the
earrings then at Sarah and noticing his surreptitious movements understood
perfectly. AJ was amused when she actually winked at him, picked up the
earrings and quietly ran his credit card. After a quick signature, he
pocketed his card and the small box she put the earrings in. He walked up
to Sarah and lightly touched her on the small of her back and again commented
on the time.
“Okay, but I want to come back
here sometime,” she said as they left the store.
They walked back up to the
restaurant and arrived in time to see a limo drop off some elegantly dresses
diners. Sarah once again commented on her attire but AJ said she looked
fine. They walked in to the Italian place and he gallantly took her
jacket. Moments after they walked in they were met by the tuxedoed maitre
d.
“Welcome to Ristorante
Renato. How may I help you?”
“We have reservations under a
friend’s name, Jeremy Hunter,” AJ said,
“I hope all is well with Signore
Hunter.”
“I believe he said his date
canceled.”
“That’s too bad,” said the
maitre d with a smile as he picked up two menus removed a pink sheet and
replaced it with a blue sheet. “If you will just follow me?”
Sarah was sure that they would
be seated somewhere in the back, near the kitchens considering their clothes
but was pleasantly surprised to be seated just across from the fire place in a
dimly lit booth. The maitre d laid her napkin across her lap as he
explained the special for the evening. Sarah opened her menu and was
shocked by the prices, until she saw the hand lettered blue sheet with the
weekday special. Appetizers, salads, entrée, dessert for two and a bottle
of wine for only $50.
“I think Dr. Hunter is a loyal
customer. I saw the maitre d switch the
specials sheet in our menus. I can’t
believe that they would have such a great special on Valentine’s,” AJ said.
“Good evening. My name is Guiseppe and I will be serving
you tonight,” he said. “Are you ready
to order?”
“Yes,” AJ said. “We would like the special. Sarah?”
“I’ll have the mozzarella in
carozza then the filet and scallops.”
“How would you liked that
cooked?”
“Medium well, please.”
“Very well. Sir?”
“I’ll have the shrimp cocktail
and the scalloppina Romeo and Juliet.
Do you have sparkling cider instead of wine?”
“Yes, Sir. I’ll bring that right out,” he said as he
slipped away from the table.
“AJ, I don’t mind if you have a
drink.”
“I know. But I don’t want one,” he said amused at the
stubborn look cross her face.
“Honestly. I don’t want to have
a bottle of wine and, also, I promised my friend that I wouldn’t have anything to
drink if I was driving his car.”
They talked about the restaurant for a while before falling silent when the
appetizers and meals arrived. AJ looked at her and said, “I’ve enjoyed
today.”
“I agree,” Sarah said. “I meant what I said earlier.”
“About what?” AJ asked as he
took a bite of his chicken and veal dish.
“Everything I’ve said today was
true,” she said as she looked down.
“Harm really is just a friend.”
AJ was about to speak when
suddenly a man walked up to the fireplace and picked up a guitar. He began to play soft classical music
causing much conversation to stop for a moment.
“Everything I've said today was
true too, Sarah,” AJ said breaking the silence. “We need to see about making a decision about what we’re going to
do.”
Sarah ate the last scallop and
said, “We do. Thank you for not trying
to make the decision by yourself.”
“It does affect you too,” he
smiled. “I think the easiest is for me
to retire.”
“It might be easy but I don’t
want you to give up the Navy for me.
I’m sure we can come up with something else.”
“That might not be easy, Sarah,”
he said as he reached out and touched her hand.
“I know. But, AJ, you love the Navy and I don’t want
to be the reason you leave it.”
“Okay. We’ll see if we can find something else but I will retire if I
have to. Because, honestly Sarah. I don’t want to wait for too long.”
Sarah smiled at AJ, lightly
squeezed his hand then pulled away as dessert was served. They both enjoyed the Orange Kiss that came
with the special. It was an orange
sorbet served in an orange peel. They
ate their dessert in silence, while listening to the guitar music until the
musician took a break. Guiseppe
returned when they were finished and cleared away the dishes before returning
to hand AJ the check and Sarah a red rose.
AJ handed over his credit card and then once Guiseppe was gone he pulled
out a box for Sarah.
“Happy Valentine’s day,” he
said.
“What’s this?”
“Open it,” he grinned. Sarah opened the little box and discovered a
small pair of earrings. “I saw them at
the Irish Eyes store while you were looking at other things.”
“AJ these are beautiful. I can wear these with my uniform.” She looked at them closer and saw the small,
engraved claddagh symbols on them.
“Thank you, AJ.”
Sarah reached to remove the ones
she was wearing to put on her new ones. As she did, she heard someone
singing. She looked over to see a man at a table in front of the
fireplace singing to a woman at the table with him. He was singing in
Italian and she looked at AJ to see if he would tell her what he was
singing. AJ unobtrusively stood up and slipped into the booth beside her
to whisper the words to her. Sarah thought that was wonderfully romantic,
both the man singing and AJ’s whispered words.
She was not the only one in the restaurant to gasp when the man suddenly
dropped to one knee and handed the woman a ring. The woman took the ring,
and with tears in her eyes, she nodded then kissed her new fiancé. The
other diners applauded for the happy couple then got back to their meals.
“I guess we need to leave,” AJ
said after he signed the bill that was dropped off.
“Do we have to?” she asked, not
wanting to go.
“We probably should.” They pick up their coats and soon they were
headed out to the car.
Friday March 21, 2003
Outside Admiral Chegwidden’s
office
“Tiner. Is the Admiral available?” asked Sarah.
“Let me check, Ma’am,” Tiner
said before turning to the intercom.
“Admiral? Colonel MacKenzie is
back from her meeting and she wants to speak with you.”
“Send her right in.” Sarah turned to the closed door, knocked
then entered. “Have a seat. How did the meeting with Sheffield go?”
“It went well, Sir. The SecNav was pleased with our report. He most definitely wants this system and he
has already taken steps to acquire it from Dr. Hunter.”
“That’s good. Does he foresee any problems with the
acquisition?”
“Not particularly. But he does want legal representation
available.”
“That shouldn’t be a
problem. You already know what is going
on with this so-“
“That’s the problem, Sir. He wants me to be the permanent legal counsel,”
she said with a bit of regret.
“Permanent?”
“Yes, Sir. He suggested that I transfer to his command
but remain here at JAG HQ so I can help out on the bench when ever necessary.”
“You’ll transfer from my command
but you will remain here at JAG?” he asked not daring to hope anything.
“Yes, Sir,” she said with a
small smile. “He wants me to be here to
work on any cases involving CUPID-“
“Cupid? Don’t tell me he named the system Cupid?”
“Unfortunately, he did. The SecNav thought it would be amusing and
easy to remember. It actually means the
Cyber Unit for Personal Interactive Dreaming,” she said amused as he
shook his head in disbelief.
“So, Colonel.
What do you think of this job opportunity?” he asked.
“It will look good on my fit rep and I think it would be
a good move. Not just for me but…” she
didn’t say anything else.
“Did you already accept it?” he asked.
“No. I told him
that I needed to think about it and that I needed to talk to my CO.”
“What do you think?”
“I want to think on it some more but I am thinking about
accepting it. The SecNav says that he
would want me to start a week from Monday.”
“Okay. Why don’t
you take the rest of the day off and start thinking about your decision?”
“I need to finish up one file then I’ll leave, if that’s
okay.”
“Very well. See
you on Monday with your decision.”
Mac left the Admiral’s office and headed back to
hers. She quickly finished up the file
then gathered her things. Mac said a
quick goodbye to Harm and Harriet in the bullpen before leaving and climbing
into her car. She thought about going
straight home but at the last minute, she changed her mind and pointed her car
toward Fredericksburg.
Mac picked up her cell phone and called Dr. Hunter to
see if he was in. After a few quick words,
she had an appointment in two hours to see him. Since she had the time, she decided that she would do a little
more window-shopping. Mac wandered
through Old Town Fredericksburg stopping in at several of the little antique
stores and specialty shops. She got
back into her car and headed up Princess Anne Street to Dr. Hunter’s
office.
Mac pulled into a spot and walked into the building to
the receptionist. “I’m here to see
Doctor Hunter.”
“Are you Sarah?” she asked.
“Yes, I am.”
“Dr. Hunter asked if you don’t mind waiting for a little
while. About half an hour maybe, he’s
just finishing up something.”
“That’s fine. I
think I’ll just run to the diner and get something to drink.”
“If all you want is something to drink, you might want
to walk up to Carl’s. They have the
best chocolate malts.”
“Thanks. I think
I’ll do that,” she said before walking out and toward her destination.
One chocolate malt and vanilla cone later, she walked
back to the office. Just after she
thanked the receptionist for her recommendation, Dr. Hunter walked out into the
lobby.
“Sarah. I’m
sorry to keep you waiting. I had a
phone call I had to take care of.”
“Not a problem,” she said as he led her back to his
office. Once they were settled, she
continued, “I just thought I would update you about the program.”
“No, you didn’t,” he said with a smile. “You could have just as easily called about
it. You came to try it out again.”
“Okay. I did,”
she said slightly embarrassed but smiling.
“Do you mind?”
“Not at all Sarah.
You are more than welcome to stop by anytime. Follow me.”
He once again led the way to his lab, gestured to Mac to
the screen so she could change into the jumpsuit.
“Since you were here last, I made a few improvements to
the system. One of the biggest is the
chair. It’s simply a recliner with a
heat and massage feature. I hooked it
up to the computer also. I’ll help you
get all hooked up then I’ll monitor everything from my office.”
“Okay,” Mac said as she walked from behind the screen to
sit down in one of the two recliners that was now in the lab. With in a short period of time she was all
connected and ready to go. Dr. Hunter
said that he would be just in the other room if she needed anything. Mac nodded then as soon as he shut the door
on the way out she pulled down the visor and was again transported to AJ’s
living room as she saw it in her previous fantasy.
AJ was looking at his CD collection then finally
selecting one he dropped it in the player.
He turned, looked at her, then walked to her and took her into his arms
as Tony Bennett began to sing. He took
her hand in his and led her in a dance.
She rested her head against his chest but was surprised when he pulled
her hand to his lips and kissed her fingertips before placing her hand on his
chest.
Mac quickly thought that this must have been the other
improvement that Dr. Hunter made because she didn’t remember her fantasy AJ
being this independent. She decided to
not think about this any more as she enjoyed the feel of being in his
arms. She let her hand caress his chest
before slipping around his neck to lightly massage there. His hand eased back around and lifted her
chin as he lowered his lips to hers.
She moaned lightly into his mouth as his tongue demanded entrance.
Mac lost herself to his kiss, their hands lightly
roaming as their hips continued to sway in time to the music. She began to feel his erection growing and
pressing into her lower belly and she heard him moan as she pressed a bit
harder. He suddenly pulled back and
swept her into his arms and carried her into his bedroom. AJ eased her to her feet and stood back a
step as he watched her pull off her turtleneck. AJ then unbuttoned his shirt then pulled it off.
They stood there a moment and simply looked their fill
until she slipped out of her shoes. AJ
sat down on the edge of the bed, pulled his boots off then stood back up with a
slight smile as if thinking, ‘Your turn.’
Sarah smiled back at him and keeping her eyes locked with his, she
unbuttoned her jeans and pulled them off.
She stood there in her matching black lace bra and thong panties as he
stripped off his jeans to reveal white boxers.
She was pleased to see his erection already straining to get free.
Sarah reached around, unhooked her bra, then after
removing it, she slipped off her damp panties.
AJ then removed his boxers as she tried to look as much as
possible. She knew she wasn’t going to
get a chance to actually do this for a long time if ever and she wanted to be
able to remember all of it. Sarah
looked away, worried for a moment if this was right. Sure, it felt wonderful and she knew it was just a fantasy but
she didn’t have his permission.
“Sarah. I want
this as much as you do,” AJ said with a huskier voice than she imagined before
he pulled her back into his arms and kissed her.
Sarah no longer thought about anything other than his
hands on her skin and hers on his. She
stepped back and leaned back onto the bed pulling AJ on top of her. He quickly rolled off her but she followed
him. Sarah straddled his hips and sat
up, her damp flesh against his erection.
With one hand she grasped him and then slowly lowered herself inch by
inch. Once he was completely inside
her, she paused getting used to the feel of him. Sarah splayed her hands over AJ’s chest enjoying the feel of his
crisp chest hair. Soon the need to move
overtook her and they both began to move their hips in a slow and easy
rhythm.
Their movements soon became faster and more urgent. Sarah trailed her fingernails down AJ’s
chest lightly tweaking his nipples before she slipped one hand between her own
legs. AJ’s fingers quickly replaced
hers and moments later she was crying out his name.
Sarah struggled to catch her breath and exhausted, she
rolled over, with him still hard inside her.
This time he followed her and making sure he didn’t crush her, he began
to thrust slow and deep. Sarah reached
up and touched his face and his torso as much as she could. She knew that she would never forget what he
looked like but she wanted to always remember what he felt like.
AJ must have enjoyed her caresses because in just a few
moments he shuddered and moaned her name.
Sarah wrapped her legs around AJ’s hips, not wanting to let him go just
yet. She touched her left hand to his
face as she finally spoke.
“I love you, AJ.”
She watched his eyes reveal his feelings then as he took her hand in
his.
“I love you, Sarah,” he said as he kissed her hand
drawing her attention to the wedding band there.
Reality crashed down on Sarah as she gasped, knowing
that she never imagined that. She
flipped up the visor and was shocked to see AJ in the recliner next to
her. He had just removed his helmet and
was watching her with smoldering eyes.
“How long have you been here, AJ?” she asked quietly.
“Since the beginning.
This is the other improvement Dr. Hunter made; so two people can have a
fantasy together and alter the others.
I guess he didn’t mention that,” he said with a small smile.
“No. He didn’t,”
she said slightly embarrassed.
“I’m glad he made this change. This way I got to experience something wonderful. And hear something I’ve wanted to hear for a
long time.”
“Oh AJ. I’ve
wanted to hear you say that too. I just
never thought I would,” she said looking down at her once again bare left hand.
AJ saw the direction of her gaze and knew what she was
thinking. He rose from the recliner and
took her hand into his.
“Some day, hopefully soon, I can say those words
again. Then I can really be yours not
just virtually yours.”
Epilogue
Saturday September 27, 2003
Renato’s, Fredericksburg, VA
AJ and Sarah walked into what they considered ‘their’
restaurant. They were greeted by the maitre d and led to a secluded booth. Sarah was surprised when AJ sat beside her
instead of across from her but she didn’t mind, she was just a bit concerned.
“AJ? What if someone sees us together?”
“It’s okay, Sarah. You aren’t in my chain of command so there
is nothing wrong with this. Besides,
Sheffield already knows.”
“He knows?” she asked surprised.
“You mean, he didn’t say
anything to you about it?” AJ asked equally surprised.
“Why would he? When did you tell him?”
“A few months ago. Actually, just after Harriet had the
baby. He knew that I was short staffed
with both her and Bud gone, he suggested that you come back to JAG full
time. I told him that wouldn’t be
appropriate. Sheffield asked why, I
explained, he didn’t seem to have a problem with it.”
“Really?” she asked before
smiling. “Nelson would have had a fit.”
“Very true,” he smiled in return
as he took her hand into his. “Since
Sheffield is okay with us, there is no reason not to tell our friends. I know that you haven’t liked keeping it a
secret.”
“It’s been difficult. You don’t know how often I’ve wanted to lock
your office door and have my way with you.
It might be nice to not hide anymore.”
“It will,” he said as Guiseppe
arrived with their meals.
“I’m still surprised that
Harriet never suspected. I thought she
might have when she told me the baby’s name,” Sarah said.
“You didn’t know until after she
was born?”
“No. Harriet said she was worried about this pregnancy and didn’t want
to reveal too much too soon.”
“I don’t blame her. I guess that explains the tears then when
you were holding MacKenzie.”
“I was surprised and
touched. I still can’t believe that
she’s already two months old.”
“Time flies with little ones.”
“AJ, Sarah?” Jeremy Hunter asked
as he and a woman walked up to the booth.
“I see you liked this place.”
“Yes, thank you again for
recommending it,” said AJ.
“I’m glad you were able to use
the reservations. My wife Mary Ann and
I decided at the last minute to have Valentine’s to ourselves at home,” he said
with a smile as he slipped his arm around his wife. “We better go and leave you two alone. Seems that my program did do some good.”
“Yes, it did,” Sarah said.
“Then it’s all been worth
it. Enjoy the rest of your meal,” Dr.
Hunter said as he and his wife headed out the door.
“I would certainly say the
program did some good,” AJ said softly as one hand slipped beneath the table to
caress Sarah’s knee.
“The fantasy was fine, the real
thing was so much better,” she leaned up to lightly kiss his lips. At that moment, that Tony Bennet song began
to play softly over the speakers. AJ
smiled at Sarah and took her hand in his.
“Come with me,” he whispered as
he stood up.
“What?”
“I want to dance.”
“There’s no dance floor, AJ.”
“I’ll improvise,” he said as he
led her into the banquet room in the back of the restaurant. Knowing that no one was inside, he closed
the door behind them and pulled her into his arms. They were quiet, just enjoying each other for a while, before he
finally spoke.
“The first time we were together
was so much better than that fantasy we shared. Except for one thing.”
“What’s that?” she said trying
to hide the little bit of hurt that surfaced.
“The first time we made love,
you weren’t wearing this,” he said as he held up his mother’s engagement
ring. She looked from the ring to his
eyes, shocked by what he was implying.
“Sarah, will you marry me?”
“Oh, AJ.”
“I love you, Sarah and I want
the world to know that I’m yours.”
Sarah held up her left hand for
him to slip the ring on her finger.
“And I’m yours.”
The end
