Mac awoke late the following day knowing that
she had had a dream about her mystery hero but for some reason she couldn’t
remember any of it this time. While she was lying there trying to remember any
detail about the dream, the phone rang. She was actually surprised to hear Mic
on the other end of the line.
"Sarah?"
"Morning, Mic. What’s up?"
"Well, I had a bit of a surprise and I
was wanting to know if you could do me a favor?"
"Mic," Mac said warningly.
"Now, Sarah, I know you gave me back my
ring and I am okay with that. Or I will be. But I have a bit of a problem. And
I need your help."
"What’s wrong?"
"My mum. She, um…"
"Is she okay?" she asked worried,
knowing how close Mic was to his family.
"Oh no. She’s just fine. The problem is
that she showed up last night with my brother."
"She’s here?"
"Yes. And she wants to meet my
fiancée."
"Oh, Mic. I can’t lie to your
mother."
"I’ll tell her after the party,
okay?" he said pleadingly.
"Party?" she asked.
"Oh yeah. She planned a party for us and
I really don’t have the heart to tell her that she wasted all her time,"
he said.
"You’ll tell her right after the
party?" Mic could tell that she was about to give in.
"Yes. I promise. I’ll even treat you to
lunch next week at Beltway Burgers."
She laughed, "Okay, Mic. You’re
on."
"Great. Thank you, Sarah. I’ll pick you
up around 1700 hours okay? By the way, it’s kind of formal."
"1700 sounds good. See you then."
She heard a female voice in the background as
Mic said, "Bye, luv." Mac just shook her head as she hung up the
phone. She got up and dressed in her sweats and went for her morning run.
Later that afternoon, Mac went to the mall.
She wanted to get a little gift for Mic's mother and she needed to buy a couple
of new pairs of panty hose. On her way past one store that was notoriously
expensive, Mac spotted a dress in the window. She knew that the dress would be
far too expensive but she was drawn to it. She walked into the store to look at
the cobalt blue dress, which was surprisingly on sale so it was rather
affordable. Amazingly, there was only one left and it was her size. She decided
to go ahead and splurge knowing that she could and would wear that dress again.
On her way to the register, she spotted the lingerie. She knew that no one
would get a chance to see it but she figured that she might as well match the
dress. She picked out the bra, panties and even decided to get the matching
garter belt. So much for the pantyhose she had already bought so she picked up
a pair of silk stockings also. If she was going to splurge she might as well go
all the way, right?
When she got home and after she dressed, she
was over come with the strangest sense of déjà vu. She could almost picture
herself in the same dress but in a tent of all places. As cold as it was
outside she knew that she wouldn’t want to be stuck in a tent anytime soon. She
broke from her reverie when she heard someone knocking on the door. She went to
greet Mic and invited him in. He looked appreciatively at her dress.
"Beautiful dress."
"Thank you, Mic. I found it this
afternoon."
"Well it suits you. Are you ready?"
"Sure." He took her wrap from her
and helped her into it. "Do you mind if we take your car? I'll probably
stay overnight."
"Sure, as long as you drive." Mic
took the keys from her then after helping her into the car, he pulled out of
the parking lot. Mic drove for about an hour before he pulled into the city of
Frederick, his mother's hometown.
"Where are we going, Mic?"
"Oh. My mum's place."
"Your mom's place?"
"Well her family's place at least. She's
American, she grew up here and went to college here."
Mac watched the scenery pass by as Mic
continued to drive past a large cemetery then into a large subdivision. She was
surprised to see in the middle of the subdivision a large patch of trees.
"I remember when this was all fields, no other houses," reminisced
Mic as he pulled into the lone drive in the middle of the trees. Mac gasped as
she finally saw the house at the end of the teardrop shaped drive.
"Oh, Mic. It's beautiful," she said
in awe while looking at the three-story house that could only be described as a
mansion. Mic took her hand and led her to the house. They stepped into the
foyer and Mac felt as though she had been transported back in time. Antiques
surrounded her as she was lead through the foyer and into the living room where
she met Mic's very large family.
