Time set: directly after A Separate Peace
It was a busy Friday afternoon at JAG. Webb
had dropped by to go over some details about Admiral Boone’s case. Harm wanted
to know if his father had been involved in any CIA activities. Webb said that
to the best of his knowledge the only involvement that Harmon Rabb, Sr. had
with the CIA was an occasional flight.
"I want details, Webb," Harm said
in a harsh voice.
"Rabb, the only place that I have ever
seen his name is when he was the pilot for an occasional aerial photo mission
and once or twice ferrying agents from one place to another. Rabb, he was
clean. There is nothing on the record that could be deemed even remotely suspicious."
Harm wasn’t sure if Webb was lying or not,
but it did help put his mind at ease. Harm waited a moment then nodded at Webb.
They walked out of Harm’s office and saw Harriet, with Little AJ, talking to
Mac and the Admiral. Harriet mentioned that they were going to have a small
dinner party on Sunday and everyone was invited, even Webb. Bud looked
surprised but when he saw the look of, ‘What, was I supposed to invite everyone
but him?’ he realized that she was right.
Webb was touched that they invited him to
dinner, considering their history; but he knew that they didn’t really want him
there. "Thank you Harriet but I have plans for Sunday. I’m going riding
with Mother." Although their expressions revealed nothing, they all
wondered why Mac looked shocked and suddenly went pale. The Colonel managed to
regain her composure and told Harriet that she would love to come. Harm and AJ
also accepted before they returned to their offices. Clay left and Harriet
followed Mac into her office.
"Ma’am. Are you okay?" Harriet
looked concerned.
Mac tried to ignore the question. "Sure.
I’m the one who should be asking that. How are you doing?"
"Better, Ma’am," a saddened look
came over her face for a moment until she looked down at her son then she
smiled lightly. "That’s why Bud and I want to have the dinner. To thank
you all for everything you have done for us."
"Harriet, you don’t have to do
that."
"I know, but we want to." Harriet
paused a moment then returned to the previous subject. "Ma’am, why did you
go pale when Mr. Webb said he was going horseback riding. I thought you knew he
rode."
"I knew, but…" Mac stopped. She was
confused, she didn’t think she should bother Harriet with her problems.
"What?" Harriet asked gently hoping
that Mac would confide in her. Mac hesitated then Harriet continued,
"Ma’am you’ve done so much to help me I would like to do what I can to
help you." Mac looked at the earnest young woman in front of her.
"Well, I’ve been having these strange
dreams," Mac admitted.
"About Webb?" Harriet asked
incredulously.
"No!" she said emphatically.
"Well, I don’t think so. I don’t know. I don’t know whom they are about.
That’s the strange thing."
"But what does this have to do with Mr.
Webb?" Harriet was a bit confused.
"A couple of nights ago I dreamt about a
cowboy, the next night it was a knight in shining armor, then last
night--" She sighed. "That’s the reason I had such an odd reaction to
what Webb said. The dream I had last night was of a man all dressed in proper
hunt clothes. He was riding a large bay horse and he helped me after my horse
refused a jump."
"I didn’t know you jumped."
"I ride but I don’t jump. He got off his
horse and helped me onto his then we continued on. He avoided any more jumps
except one. I thought I was going to fall off but he held me tight and said
"I’ve got you, Sarah." All I knew was that I was safe and I could
trust him. I never see his face, but I can tell I know the man. He is familiar
somehow."
"Ma’am, I think you need to come over
earlier on Sunday so we can talk about these dreams. I want details,"
Harriet said curiously.
"Harriet," Mac said in a slightly
warning tone but with a smile.
"Maybe if you talk about the dreams you
can figure out why you are having them."
Mac paused a moment. "Okay. What time do
you want me there?"
"How about 1400? You can help with
dinner."
"Okay," Mac said with a bit of
resignation.
