Harm
led the way to his apartment and tried to ignore the CIA agent following
him. "Come on, Rabb. We need you help on this one," he said
insistently.
"Sorry. I've got enough on my plate right now,"
he said as he opened the door. He let
the phone ring as he put down his briefcase and cover.
"Rabb,
you don't understand how important this is." Both men ignored the answering machine as it picked up. "I've heard about a meeting tonight
that could solve all of this."
"What
is all this about anyway?"
"This
is about the theft of hundreds of weapons and if we catch the ringleader-"
he broke off abruptly as he heard the voice on the machine.
"Rabb,
I know you're there. You and that damn
spook. I've told you to back off and
leave her alone but you didn't listen.
Meet me in two hours at the abandoned warehouse on 14th
Street or you'll be sorry."
"Was
that…?" asked Webb.
"Yes. It was.
That's what I'm trying to get taken care of. And I don't want Mac to know about it."
"Well,
looks like you will help me after all.
That's where I'm going too."
Both men looked at each other and fell silent as Harm went to change to
civilian clothes.
Less
than forty-five minutes later Harm and Webb arrived at the warehouse and began
to investigate to find out how many people were involved. They found two men on guard and what
appeared to be four men inside. Harm
decided to call for back up knowing that that would be for the best. Harm called the Admiral and noticed Webb
quietly calling in some of his counterparts.
AJ
prepared anything and as he readied himself he decided to call Mac. He wanted someone he knew to watch his back
and he didn't want to trust a spook.
Mac was home and said that she would be ready to go by the time he
arrived. After AJ swung by to pick her
up, they made it to the warehouse just in time. Mac stayed back in the shadows while AJ talked to Webb. They decided on a signal that Webb would use
when the surveillance people had gotten enough for a solid conviction. AJ found Mac and they crept over to the
other side of the warehouse to wait for Webb's signal.
Just
after they settled into their hiding place, AJ heard a snap of a twig behind
him just before he felt the cold steel of a gun as it was pressed to the back
of his head. The captors led AJ and Mac
into the building and restrained Mac to a pipe against the wall and AJ to a
chair just far enough away to out of her reach. Mac watched as their captors walked out of the room then she
slipped down the pipe and sat on the concrete floor. They sat there for a moment looking at each other. AJ could see the fear in Mac's eyes, but not
overwhelming fear, and that impressed him.
Mac knew that Rabb and Webb were just out side and that they could hear
everything that was going on and could be there any second. AJ kept his emotions hidden better than Mac,
but he still berated himself for trusting Webb's count of the guards and not
checking himself.
Webb
and Harm were about ready to go in shooting when Webb saw Mac and AJ in the
building.
"Damn,
they have AJ," said an upset Webb.
He lifted his binoculars and looked again. "And Mac."
"Mac? She's here?" asked a startled Harm.
"AJ
must have brought her to watch his back."
He saw Harm's furious face and tried to defend himself, "How was I
supposed to know he would bring her?
Besides you were the one that called him."
Webb
could see that Harm cared little for his way of thinking as Harm spat out,
"If she gets hurt you son of a bitch…"
The
captors tried to get information out of AJ and Mac about anyone else who might
be lurking about. AJ didn't answer but
after a few moments Mac got tired of listening to them cuss and threaten them
and she said, "I don't know what you are talking about. I didn't see anyone but him out there."
The big burly guy reached out and
slapped her across her face. Before
either of them could react a gunshot rang out.
The burly guy was now clutching his bleeding shoulder. In surprise, they all looked at the man with
the gun.
"Oh,
Mic. Thank god. Cut us loose and help
us get out of here."
“Sorry,
luv. I can’t let you go.” He said in a cold voice as he pointed the
gun at AJ.
