The ASL Immersion Weekend

1)    I'm a level ( insert your present level) student.  Can I come to the Immersion Weekend?

Yes, everyone is welcome to come to the Weekend.

2)    But.... I'm a level ( insert your present level) student.  Will I understand the presenter?  Will I be lost?

A very good question.  It might be very true to say that nobody gets everything.  But, that being a very general and uninformative answer I would say that people get out of the Weekend exactly what they put into it.  The Weekend has been attended by people who know NO sign whatsoever, to seasoned interpreters, to D/deaf people.  I've had level 1 students tell me how much they learned and loved the weekend, followed by a level 4 or 5 say they were lost -- in the same Weekend.  If one comes to the Weekend with a positive attitude, one will learn.  Learning takes place not only during the workshop part, but during free time, in the cafeteria, in your cabin, at the storytelling, etc.  You may or may not get everything the presenter teaches -- past presenters have had no problem repeating themselves, or talking with participants at breaks and such.  It is a FACT (regardless of your level) that your eyes continuously take in all the signing and such that is going on.  You may come to realize that something you sign or "remember" later may have been processed from the Weekend!  I have had return participants tell me this.  I hope this covers the question.

    3)    I want to be in the same cabin with my friends.  Will you please assign me to the same cabin?

I let you  assign yourself to a cabin.  The Park has given each cabin a name.  The cabins will designated as WOMEN'S and MEN'S.  As you arrive at the weekend, you will place your name on the cabin of your choice, based on room available.  If you are the first of your group to arrive, you may place their names on the list along with yours - again, providing there is room.  I only ask that you monitor the registration area and let your friends know their names are placed, lest they sign up on another cabin.

    4)     Can I bring wine or beer?

Please do not.  The Park's official guidelines prohibit alcoholic beverages on the grounds.  Thank you for your compliance.

    5)    Can I at least smoke then?

Smoking is NOT allowed in any of the buildings at the Park  (Missouri State Park Regulations)  There are designated smoking areas outside the cafeteria and some of the cabins.  The Park provides ash cans for the disposal of your butts.  Please be responsible for your butts and considerate of those who do not smoke.  Your cooperation is very appreciated.

    6)    I am D/deaf.  Can I bring my support dog with me for the weekend?

The Park does recognize and accept certified support dogs.  If you are bringing your support dog to the Weekend, please let me know.  I will then let the Park staff know.

    7)    I am a diabetic and/or I have special dietary needs.  Am I out of luck for eating the cafeteria food?

The cafeteria staff has always been very cooperative when it comes to meeting your needs.  They are quite used to feeding special needs people.  Let me know in advance of your requirements, and I will pass that on to the staff.  You can also bring prepared foods that they will microwave for you.

    8)    I can't get there until later Friday night.  Is that OK?

Yes, that is OK.  Be aware that the Park closes at dusk.  There is a security gate that can be opened with a code.  Let me know in advance of your inability to arrive on time, and I will get the code to you.  Once you arrive please see me to register.

    9)    I'll be there on time, but I have to leave early.  How about that?

Yes, that's OK too.  I do ask that you let me know when you're leaving.  I like to keep tabs on that for security reasons.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

    10)    Is the Park "accessible"?

Yes, all areas of the Weekend ( and the whole Park for that matter ) are accessible.

    11)    Can I call my family/friend/husband/wife/partner/dog to tell them I arrived safely?

Yes, the Park has a pay phone you can use.  Since this is an Immersion Weekend, I will provide a TTY -  You can use Missouri Relay, or the designated interpreter while on the pay phone..  Be advised that the area of the Park where the Weekend located is in a secluded valley, therefore cell phone and pager reception has proven to be poor to non-existent.  Do not rely on these forms of communication while at the retreat site.

    12)    I have some games I'd like to bring for free time.  Is that ok?

          Of course!!

    13)     I need a certificate of completion for my records. Do you provide one?

Yes, a Certificate of Completion will be presented at lunch on Sunday.

    14)    Can I get CEU's for coming to the Weekend?

Yes, both R.I.D. and Missouri CEU's are applied for, each Weekend!

    15)    I want to leave the Outdoor Education Center to enjoy another part of the park (or any other reason for leaving the workshop area).  Is that OK?

I certainly can't stop you from leaving the area, even though I'd hope you'd stay to get the most of your experience.  I know "things" happen though!!  It is OK that you leave for whatever your reason!  In the past, people who have left and returned told me they kept their vocal silence -- I applaud that, but it is a choice you will make on your own.  DISCLAIMER:  If you choose to leave, you agree that you are doing so on your own volition and that you know and agree that Babler State Park and I are in NO way responsible for you.

    16) I have another question -- I can't think of it right now, but I do have one.  What should I do?
