This year's workshop
presentation focuses on ASL semantics and discourse. We will learn
about these topics through lecture, then continue on with plenty of
hands-on activities. We will work on the meanings of signs and,
"why a sign can go here, but not there!" It is important
to understand how and why ASL organizes signs as it does. Semantics is the
science or study of "meaning" in language. We will
also work on
how to organize our conversations, lectures, etc. by working on
discourse. When we work on semantics we will still be working on
discourse, and visa-versa!
ASL
Immersion Weekend 2004 is open to anyone interested in American Sign Language. This includes students of ITPs and sign language
programs, interpreters, families and friends of D/deaf or hard of hearing individuals, and
special education teachers. MJ's workshop,
as well as your interaction with other participants throughout the weekend, will offer
plenty of opportunities to improve your receptive and expressive skills in a relaxing
retreat environment. Through exposure, participants will also gain a deeper understanding
of Deaf Culture and the Deaf community's language: ASL. The Immersion Weekend will be
conducted using visual communication; participants will not use their voices.

This is the ASL Immersion
Weekend's 10th anniversary! MJ was the first Weekend's
presenter. Many evaluation forms throughout the years had MJ's name
down as a "suggestion for a presenter". I thought it
appropriate to have her return for this year's ASL Weekend. |
