Established in
1984, INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Department of Rehabilitation, sponsors a support
group for amputees, their families, friends and any professional or medical
personnel interested in amputee issues or working in the rehabilitation field. Interested individuals are invited to attend
meetings and events and to receive the monthly newsletter free of charge. Donations and sponsorship of events and
expenses are welcome. The group meets on a monthly basis to discuss issues involved in losing a limb, such as body image, financial concerns, relationships and employment changes. Group members share ideas and encourage each other by talking about their feelings, experiences and frustrations. Professional expertise is provided; speakers discussing various topics of amputation culture are included in meeting agendas. Members also provide peer visitation (both pre- and post-surgical, as requested) mentoring the novice amputee’s return to an active lifestyle with quality of life. |
