In
the "Destinations" series, I took photographs of domestic and international tourists as they reach their destination, whether
they be a natural wonder, a man-made structure or a remarkable event. I then selectively excised elements of the photograph
leaving behind people gazing at empty space. Each resulting
image evokes responses from the viewers based on their own beliefs, bias and experiences.
This series also looks back into
the history of tourism as pilgrimages to holy sites and attendance of religious events; as an inter-cultural learning experience;
and, as travel for leisure. Further, it speaks to ideas of final destination as something awe-inspiring, meant to stop
us on our tracks to take in what is (or what we think is) before us.
The parts of the photograph that has been excised
has also been shredded and framed in together with the remaining image. The dizzying lights of Times Square, a seaside resort,
or the Notre Dame all reduced to similar piles. The viewer may see them as clues --- pieces that will help complete the puzzle
--- or simply as foreground that helps them realize their own narratives.
