Each work in this series is a contemplation on the last words of a death row inmate. Background elements of a photograph is
excised, shredded, and then laid down piece-by-piece into the background to form what appears like random shapes, clouds or
settling dust. On the outside, last words seem like final thoughts. Some profess guilt or innocence; some are final messages
to loved ones; others sound like cryptic messages. But after years of incarceration, are death row inmates the same persons
as the day they were convicted. Are these last words real emotions? Are they a summary of one’s life? Or are they simply
memories that linger beneath the surface until that final moment?
