James Trusler was born November 7, 1755, in Amherst County, Virginia

While residing in Amherst County, Virginia, he enlisted the last of June, 1780, served as a private in Captain Ezeriah Martin's Company, Colonel Smith's Virginia Regiment and was discharged January 24, 1781.

After the Revolution, he resided in Washington County, Virginia, and in 1810 or 1811, removed to Franklin County, Indiana.

He died September 5, 1844.

The soldier married July 4, 1776, in Augusta County, Virginia, Susannah, whose maiden name was not stated.

Soldier's widow, Susannah, was allowed pension on her application executed August 23, 1851, at which time she was aged ninety-six years and resided in Blooming Grove Township, Franklin County, Indiana.

James and Susannah Trusler had eleven children, all of whom, it was stated, lived to be grown except the oldest who died when young. The only name of a child that is given is Sarah Adair, who in 1851, was residing in Franklin County, Indiana, and then stated that she was born in 1782, in Virginia.

James left a large, well established family in Indiana.According to the Biograph of Milton Trusler by the Lewis Publishing Company,

About the year 1812 he emigrated with his family to the wilds of the Hoosier State, coming to Franklin County and settling on a tract of excellent land in the vicinity of the present little village of Fairfield. Here he developed a good farm, upon which he passed the residue of his days, passing away about the year 1840, at the age of eighty-two. He was a man of strong individuality and upright live, being known as one of the successful and influential farmers of this section, where he was uniformly honored and respected, by reason of his sterling character. In his religious adherence he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which he was a most devout and earnest worker.

According to his pension files, after the war he travelled to the "Washington area" (part of which later became Tennessee), and by (about) 1811 he and his family migrated to "the wilds of Indiana." According to an old article in the "Connersville Examiner" James claimed to be descended from Pocahuntas "through the male line." MELVIN WATSON TRUSLER b 28 Nov 1894 Rushville IN m Ruth Lucille Hartman (10 Mar 1902 - 10 June 1971 ) Melvin died 27 Aug 1967 and is buried next to Ruth in the Forest Rose Cemetery in Lancaster OH. Melvin rode on the chuck wagon during cattle drives with his father, William. He learned French in Canada and saw quite a bit of the country on these drives. He helped his dad in their meat market, learned the glass trade, and was a boxing promoter in the 30's and 40's.
