| In the several months
that followed Andy's stroke, I have used this space to present a chronological
description of Andy's recovery. Somehow, this approach seems inadequate,
now that the impact of this unfortunate event is being played out in Andy's
life and that of his family. Therefore, this will be an attempt to show
both the favorable and the so far, unfavorable, status of Andy's experience
and recovery.
Favorably, Andy has received considerable
help from Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital and the LEAPS Program/Study.
At this time, Andy is able to walk without help and his speech is
reasonably good, everything considered. While the rehabilitation services
focused on the priorities believed to be most critical to Andy's recovery,
not everything could be accomplished at once. The result is that some areas
of Andy's everyday abilities have not sufficiently recovered for him to
do the things he once did to support himself and his family.
Although it is possible that Andy's recovery
may never obtain his once exceptional ability as an accordionist, it is
at least hopeful that in another year or so, some degree of his previous
abilities may be restored. Andy's mind is sharp and his math skills are
good. His main difficulty is in controlling his right arm and hand movements.
At times, other arm and leg movements have been difficult to control. Andy
has developed a number of techniques to help this, such as heat application
preceding his therapeutic exercises.
Since the stroke event, Andy has not been
able to work to support himself and his family. Their financial situation
has increasingly worsened, as medical expenses pile up and some rehabilitation
services, once believed to be covered, are now being denied. It could
be another year before Andy will be able to work.
Many who have read this space have sent
their well wishes to this writer, requesting them to be passed along to
Andy and his family. This is being done. However, considering the situation
for the foreseeable future, it would seem better to send your good wishes,
prayers if you have them, and any helpful contributions directly to Andy's
home. The address is at the top of this page.
An important general Note: To all
who have held a prior business relationship with Andy, please write to
Andy's
Yahoo Address. His family will help him check his e-mail.
