Amateur Radio Emergency Service
Meeting was attended by 40 of ARES D-10 members and one visitor from D-11.
Introductions to all the ARES D-10 Staff:
Topics of discussion included:
Y2K: Agencies in Larimer & Weld Have tentative request for ARES communicators to the tune of 70 in Larimer and 64 in Weld. Total 134. That is per shift. We currently have 110 registrants on the roles here. We need help recruiting people now so we can get them trained and up to speed. ARES Staff can not do the recruiting alone. We need each person who is a member to be a recruiting agent! Help us help our communities now by recruiting for the preceived need!
We are not doom sayers, but the agencies we serve must plan for the worst case scenario! If they are to be able to depend on us in the future they need to know that we stand ready without reguard to the size of the event if the resources are available. We all hope this will be a ho-hum event, AKA the biggest non-event in history. However we can not depend of what we hope for!
On a parallel note... Make sure if you plan to respond to assist with communications that your family has a plan. If you plan to have your family stay home, possibly without power, make sure they have the means to stay warm safely! Make sure they will be secure. Consider having friends stay with them or them with friends. If sheltering is your best option.... make sure you know where they will go. Make sure you make plans well in advance.
The Red Cross has some brochures that describe a 72 hour personal preparedness kit for your home. Avail yourselves of these as they provide good information. They are available on the Red Cross web site.
Brian Gould, KB0MEP, was there to provide information about the upcoming Severe WX class on March 27, 1999. Will run from 8 AM to 5 PM. Cost is $10.00 includes printed materials and Pizza is the menu. Menu is limited in that access in and out are limited too. Please do not expect discounts on lunch if you opt not to eat. This show is difficult enough to produce without making special accomodations. Because of location we will not be able to have people coming and going, once you are there we ask you not leave until you are calling it a day or the class is over. HP has consented to allow us to use their facility, however it is a secure one. They are not charging us, but they do ask our cooperation on this one.
This year's class promises to be different than those put on before. We will have a speaker from Project Vortex, also have a speaker who controls the Denver Nets from NWS to give us some input on I am sure not only storms but Netiquitte. Pre-registration is required, so please contact either Brian @ rmedic@frii.com or myself (Randy) at rraa@frii.com.
Richard Walters, K0RAW, the AEC from Weld County was there to let folks know about the "Showcase" we will be doing for Weld County officials. This is in an effort to demonstrate some of our capabilities to the communications folks there, Office of Emergency services, fire and police departments. It will be on March 19, 1999, a friday afternoon. Contact Richard for further details.
He also presented information on a Hazmat Drill being held on May 15, 1999 at the Greeley airport. It will be a airplane crash, mid air, with hazmat involved. Pat Lambert W0IPL, from the state traning staff will be present to evaluate us based on our stated objectives.
Richard also presented information on ICS training up coming this spring and summer. Stay tuned for more details on the weekly nets and the D-10 web site.
Richard presented a portable packet station, including a unique antenna stand.
Jeff Ford, our net manager, made an appeal for net control stations. The request is for volunteers to take one net a month for three months. Then serve as a backup NCS for the following three months one night a month. For additional information contact Jeff. E-mail jmjford@verinet.com or catch him on the air.
Clyde Glass is the Loveland EOC & Administrative AEC. He catches a lot of the things I miss. Clyde is assisting in getting our roster updated but has made an offer to ARES memebers. We are in the process of issuing new ID cards for D-10. They require a photograph, which you need to provide. Clyde is getting them laminated for those who would like that to be done along with printing on your name and getting your call put on, complete with cyphered zeros, where appropriate. The cost will be no more than $1.07 for the lamination. Contact Clyde for further info. ceglass@juno.com
Minor Cross, K7YJ is the Training AEC. He is looking for presentors or a number of topics, but is also interested in what your can come up with that you can present or think might need to be presented. This is a team effort and if we take then it's always a good idea to put back in! Contact Minor with your abilities or your requests @ crossj@frii.com
As a final order of business we discussed changing the net night and time to facillitate those who go to work early (hence early to bed). Also in making it another night possibly more convienent to allow more participation from old members and new alike. We will continue thru the month of March on Tuesday night at 9:00 PM local, then go to Wednesday nights @ 7:00 pm local the first Wednesday in APRIL!!!!. If you have an issue with this please let us know, but this is in an effort to make it better for those who have found it difficult to make the Tuesday night net.
Lots discussed. This is not the issues in detail here but maybe you can be at the next meeting! Thanks to all those who took or made the time to be there. We will be doing this again in August or September to see where we are at on the issues and to review how our SETs and showcases have gone. Hoping to have a GREAT year here in D-10 and know that you all are the ones who make it happen!
Thanks for all you help and hard work. Looking forward to all the new applications you are going to help us with too!
73,
Randy, WB6AVV
