On Trail.

And Off.

This guide to the skiing trails of Notchview highlights routes favored by us and popular with others. All the major trails, plus open fields and unplowed roads, are included, probably 80 percent of the available skiing.

It's handy to divide the skiing here between Inner and Outer Trails. Unplowed Shaw Road marks the putative division. Beyond Shaw Road, to the north, lie the Outer Trails. Here the land is wilder, the hills bigger, the wildlife more likely, the sense of remove greater, the skiers fewer. At least in our prejudiced view.

Among the Inner Trails described on the following pages are Circuit (the bread-and-butter of Notchview skiing), Mushroom (for its quirkiness), Whitestone, and Mixed Wood.

All the Outer Trails are here: Minor, Bumpus (which begins as an Inner Trail but skis more like an Outer Trail even before it reaches Shaw Road), Judges Hill, Windsor.

Other than trail touring two large fields, Sawmill and Bates, offer opportunities to ski off-piste, as it were. Looking for some open downhill running, nothing too severe? Make for the fields.

Two unplowed roads--Shaw is one, Bates Road the other--cross Notchview. Their siting puts them among the Outer Trails, to which they also provide access, and their breadth makes them ideal for skating. On the downside: these are the only legal routes through the Reservation for snowmobiles.

Additionally, two loop trails totaling about three miles are groomed for those who prefer skating. One lies just east of the Visitor Center, the other farther afield to the east of Sawmill Field. No descriptions of these loops are included, probably because we have never gained much proficiency at skate skiing. Not that there's anything wrong with it

Between Shaw and Bates Road, on Shaw Brook, beaver have constructed a series of dams and impoundments. Getting there once required bushwhacking; now, a new trail provides access. A second beaver pond, with easier access, can be found close to the Visitor Center, just south of Route 9.
