Runish Font Information

Introduction

The webpages linked from this site are in Runish, which is English encoded in runes.

Since runes are a phonetic coding system, sometimes the conversion into Runish will be done by substituting the phonetic spelling of words. Alternatively, the pages may be converted using a letter-for-letter substitution; this isn't perfect but is a popular and easy method for text conversion.

To view these pages, you will need access to appropriate fonts. There are two ways that pages will be encoded for Runish viewing:

Obtaining Fonts

Every attempt has been made to ensure the greatest compatibility across these sites with the minimal amount of work for you. In order to do this, I have minimized the number of fonts you need to acquire to view these pages. I recommend you obtain two fonts:

  1. The Elder Futhark Font - Available from this site (if you don't already have "Elder Futhark" font installed on your machine) or from any of these sites:
  2. A Unicode Font - A generic multi typeface font which includes many different world languages' character sets.
All webpages on this site will utilize one of the two above font encodings.

Installing Fonts

These are the steps for the Code2000 Unicode font. Other fonts will be similar:

  1. Obtain the font
    1. Go to Code2000 for a good Unicode font.
    2. Right click on link at bottom of page (Download Code2000 (Version 1.15). ) and select "Save Target As..."
    3. Save the file to "My Computer", "Local Disk (C:)". This is the recommended location because finding it if it's on the desktop using the font loader is difficult.
  2. Unzip the font
    1. Go to "My Computer", "Local Disk (C:)" and right click on the zip file.
    2. Select "Extract all" or "Open with Winzip" (depending on whether you're using Winzip or not). If you're using winzip, extract to "C:\Code2000".
  3. Load the font
    1. Go to "Start" Menu, "Settings", "Control Panel" (or alternatively "My Computer", "Other Places", "Control Panel").
    2. When the control panel opens, double click "Fonts"
    3. When the font panel opens, go to the "File Menu" and select "Install New Font..."
    4. Navigate to "C:\" using the "Folders" box on the bottom left and then select Code2000.
