The Schabert's (cont.)

Part 2 - Michael Schabert married Celestine Poncin May 29, 1878. Between 1878 and 1900, they had eight children. Mary, Charles, Julia, Francis, Grace, Mable, Myrtle and Erwin.

Grace was born March 3, 1988 fifth child to Michael and Celestine. The Schabert's made their home in Le Sueur County in the township of Kasota, Minnesota from the late 1870's until their death in the late 1930's. (Some members of the Schabert family still reside in Minnesota today.)

Grace received her diploma for teaching in the Minnesota Common Schools on March 26, 1901. Her father Michael was a member the school district and his signature appears on the document as a clerk.

Grace and her sister Julia were teachers for several years and resided at two locations. In the 1910 census, they were listed at their parents home, most likely during the school breaks, but they were boarders in the Township of Tyrone with the Burn's family while they were teaching.

A few blocks away lived Robert and Catherine Baker with their five children, William, Stella, Grace, Harry and Esther. William Baker was born April 20, 1884 to Robert and Catherine Baker in Nicolett County Minnesota. William and Grace met and later married on September 20, 1911.

Their first child was Edwin, born in St. Peter Minnesota on May 3, 1912. Prior to 1915, the Baker's relocated to Richland County in the township of Dwight North Dakota where their second child Carol was born on December 21, 1915. On March 23, 1923, their third child Virginia was born, prior to 1930 and the birth of their fourth child Donald, the Bakers again relocated to Elk River Village in the County of Sherburn Minnesota.

More on The Schabert's and The Baker's

The census documents do not extend beyond 1930, but we know the Baker's moved to Seattle, Washington in the early 1940's and later returned to Nicolett County Minnesota and remained there until their death in the early 50's.

Sometime between 1900 and 1930, Celestine Schabert filled out a proof of resisdence form. In this form she stated that in 1862 during the Indian Outbreak her family had to seek refuge in St. Peter and they travelled their by ox team.

Many interesting tales surround the search within a census document. The Stepples who lived in the same neighborhood as the Schabert's, were found in the census documents from 1900 through the 1930's, and became became part of the Schabert family when Erwin the youngest Schabert married Emma Stepple and Myrtle Schabert later married Les Stepple.

Julia Schabert remained with her parents Michael and Celestine Schabert until their death in the late 1930's. She met and married for the first time in 1949 to a Joseph Reintjes, they both passed away in 1956 & 1957.

Stories like these are sometimes easily traced using the census documents. Others are a little more difficult, usually because the documents were either lost or somehow destroyed.
