DOWNLOADING FREE BROWSERS ONLINE, the INS AND OUTS
by Anita Sands Hernandez, email@example.com
Back in the year 2000, I felt that the BEST BROWSER online was the (then) new MOZILLA FIREFOX. (Vers 2.) MY pc was vintage, '95, O.S. was 98, so it worked for me. STILL DOES. FOR SURFING, not for EMAIL. When you surf the net it remembers passwords, what you put into FORMS, so there's no re-typing. LOVE IT! GMAIL is the mail client I use most of the time when I'm in my Mozilla. But it's not my fave. MY FAVE is a mid 90's NETSCAPE VERSION 4.7 or 4.5.
There are new versions, higher ones of MOZILLA. Surf to one, install its ICON on your DESKTOP. Punch it and in you go!
They still let you download NETSCAPE BROWSERS, all offered FREE ONLINE, no support for last five years, but who needs support? I recommend VERSION 4.7, an oldie but a goodie as it has its own, internal EMAIL CLIENT which is great at ADDRESSES, addie list making, easy to manage, easy to see but it jams when I surf the web so I have to use MOZILLA 2 for that.
In the old days, netscape gave away its browsers at their own site --- all their versions. Not sure it's still up. No I know it's not. I've looked. But tekkie sites have free downloads of it.
And there was http://www.webattack.com/freeware/misctools/fwbrowser.htmlto check out some free alternatives. If you want the same web/email functions as netscape you could try Mozilla, it's what netscape is based on and it sees sites much better than creaky, ancient netscape which is still my fave email client.
ONCE I had mastered the art of doing a download and install, I went and got a lot of different browsers being offered online. I use the free FLASHPEAK.COM "SLIM BROWSER" to default to my WALLA.COM freebie email. I use INTERNET EXPLORER browser which BILL GATES gave us with the machine, for YAHOO.com freebie e-mail. I set defaults so it goes straight to my mail box! I USE MOZILLA FIREFOX browers to visit GMAIL and AOL.com and AIM.com and HOTMAIL.com and operamail.com and Lycos three free email services where I have a dozen addies each! (As I use CRAIGS LIST for forty ads a Day, I need many addies. My old outdated MOZILLA THUNDERBIRD browser defaults to the MAILSHACK and NERDSHACK.COM email client.
SEE, every browser needs an email client inside it. Some come with one, some do not. However, you can set your browser to open or default to some FREEBIE mail SERVICE like GMAIL, YAHOO, MAILSHACK, HOTMAIL, MAIL.COM, LYCOS, NETSCAPE...well, NETSCAPE is gone. It's become AIM AND AOL.
NETSCAPE 4.7 has a free email client inside it, you don't have to install one. It also is a free browser. It crashes if it gets to a JAVA site or if you get a megabyte over coded email but I go to GMAIL FIRST, then http://www.mail2web.com where I erase all spam and megabyte sized emails even from friends. Or open it, take a look. The 'edits' and cuts done, I close it out Go to NETSCAPE and get remaining safe mail there.
Hit a BIG coded letter on NETSCAPE, it jams so you may have to exit netscape, reboot it, but hey, for me it's auld lang sygne, as it was around when I started internetting in l995. VERSION 8 is what they touted last I looked, NETSCAPE 8 then they closed shop.
NETSCAPE 9 may have an internal mail client and may still be out there downloadable, but frankly I didn't see one when I got it for a while and it erased my old one, so I lost it real fast. ANd it's rumored that for NSA security reasons, nothing like VERSION 4.7 which to my way of seeing things and many other is a great free browser, it has a great email client inside it, similar to the HUNDRED DOLLAR EUDORA they wanna sell you! EUDORA EMAIL CLIENT used to be free, maybe some old version is, go look and tell me.
If you find one, write me where, firstname.lastname@example.org the addie in my Netscape 4.7 browser.
