Applicants from the community willing to volunteer as a Fire Lookout for the 2007 fire season can apply for training with the Angeles National Forest Fire Lookout Association (ANFFLA). The ANFFLA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit association working in partnership with the USDA Forest Service – Angeles National Forest and presently staffs 2 fire lookout towers, and one open-air summit in the mountains near Los Angeles, California.
Training to be a Volunteer Lookout consists of 2 hours of program “orientation”, 3 hours of “interpretation & natural history”, 8 hours of “lookout operations”. In addition to the classroom training, the Lookout trainee must attend a 4-hour “tower checkout” session at the tower location for each tower they wish to operate.
LOOKOUT QAULIFICATIONS: · Have a strong commitment to the vision, mission, purpose, and objectives of the Fire Lookout Association. · Demonstrate the ability to watch for smoke, take weather readings, and use a two-way radio. · Demonstrate the ability to contact National Forest visitors in a courteous, informed and positive manner. · Complete required training provided by the Fire Lookout Association. · Maintain uniform in good condition and wear it only while on duty. · Agree to a minimum of two 4-hour shifts per month of service throughout the season approximately Memorial Day through Labor Day.
