Making the finials
Webster defines finial as "a crowning ornament or detail (as a decorative knob.) Feeling my organ need a little "crowning ornamentation," I made 2 finials out of ebony.


Using the (home-built) tool-post router, I first made round stock of the requisite diameter, then did some rough-shaping. Switching to a conventional lathe tool, I finished the shaping.


The final shaping and smoothing was accomplished with sand paper wrapped around a file, and with emery cloth strips. Steel wool put the final shine on the ebony. The photo on the right shows the second finial about 1/2 done.
