I'm queer and a gay white male in Riverside, California.

I'm a PhD student at the University of California-Riverside in English Literature. My areas of focus are Lesbian & Gay Studies, Colonialism & Postcoloniality, and Victorian Studies.

Ok, ok, I finally relent. I've scanned in a few pictures of me, and they're linked here.

I've got several answers: A) "Queer" captures the fact that our community is broader than the limits of bisexual, transgender, lesbian, gay or straight ally; B) "Queer" also captures the differ(a/e)nce between ourselves and so-called-normals; C) "Queer" is being reclaimed, to diffuse its power to inflict damage by those who hate; D) "Queer" has a certain shock value, it disjoins, it dislocates, it shakes things up, it's radical. Usually, the people who object to my using the word "queer" to describe myself are "normals." I ask you, who are they to determine what I call myself?

[IMAGE] The following link describes many of my attitudes and political positions, particularly when I'm angry. It's from a leaflet passed out at the 1990 New York Gay Pride Parade, from Anonymous Queers, titled Queers Read This!
