NOYES, NOYCE, or NOISE, CUTTING, Newbury, s. of Nicholas, freem. 1674, m. 25 Feb. 1674, Eliz. d. of John Knight, had John, b. 15 Dec. 1674; Cutting, 28 Jan. 1677; Eliz. 2 Jan. 1679; Nicholas, 22 May 1681, d. at 14 yrs.; Joseph, 21 Jan. 1689; and Mary, 27 Mar. 1693. JAMES, Newbury, one of the two first min. b. 1608, at Choulderton, in Wilts, near the edge of Hants, betw. Amesbury in W. and Andover in H. s. of Rev. William, who was instit. I find by the registry of that diocese, in 1602 as rector, but in 1621, resign. in favor of Nathan Noyes. His mo. was sis. of Robert Parker a very learned Puritan, driv. to Holland for his heterodoxy a. forms; and he was bred at Brazen Nose, Oxford, as his nephew, Rev. Nicholas in his acco. for Magn. III cap. 25, Append. writes, and was call. away by his cous. Thomas Parker to assist him at the sch. of Newbury, in Berksh. Hee in. 1634, Sarah, eldest d. of Mr. Joseph Brown of Southampton, and in 3far. of that yr. emb. for N. E. in co. with his br. Nicholas and cous. Thomas Parker, in the Mary and John of London, preach. some short time at Medford, was freem. 3 Sept. 1684, and invit. to Watertown ch. but in 1635 went to Newbury, and tho. younger than his collea. cous. d. flrst, 22 Oct. 1656. His will, made five days bef. ment. w. Sarah and ch. br. Rev. Nicholas N. and cous. Rev. Thomas Parker; the inv. show. good est. and ch. were Joseph, b. 15 Oct. 1637; James, 11 Mar. 1640, H. C. 1659; Sarah, 12 Aug. 1641, d. young; Moses, 6 Dec. 1643, H. C. 1659; John, 3 Jane 1645; Thomas, 10 Aug. 1648; Rebecca, I Apr. 1651; William, 22 Sept. 1653; Sarah, again, 25 Mar. 1656; and his wid. d. 13 Sept. 1691. Sarah m. 31 Mar. 1684, Rev. JAMES, Stonington, s. of the preced. began there to preach 1664, yet was not ord. bef. 10 Sept. 1674, in. next day, Dorothy, d. of Thomas Stanton (who d. 19 Jan. 1743, in her 91st yr.) had Dorothy, b. 20 June foll. tho. in ano. place the date is 16 Jan. 1676; James, 2 Aug. 1677; Thomas, 15 Aug. 1679; Ann, 16 Apr. 1682, d. at 12 yrs.; John, 13 Jan. 1685; ,Joseph, 16 Oct. 1688, Y. C. 1709; and Moses, 19 Mar. 1692, d. next mo. He preach. 55 yrs. d. 30 Dec. 1719. Much honor attach. to his name for so long faithful fulfilm. of his ministry, as in a most judicious fun. serm. by Adams of New London, is shown; and equal. so for serv. in the foundat. of Yale Coll. stand. there as the first on the list of Fellows. JOHN, Newbury, s. of Nicholas, m. 23 Nov. 1668, Mary, d. of John Poor, had Nicholas, b. 18 May 1671; Daniel, 23 Oct. 1673; Mary, 10 Dec. 1675; John, 15 Feb. 1678; Martha, 24 Dec. 1679, d. soon; Martha, again, 19 Dec. 1680; Nathaniel, 28 Oct. 1681; Eliz. 15 Nov. 1684; Moses, 22 May 1688; and Samuel, 9 Feb. 1692. He was freem. 1674. JOHN, Boston, freem. 1676, was that yr. constable, m. Sarah, d. of Peter Oliver, had Sarah; John; and Oliver, b. 1675, bapt. 22 Oct. 1676; H. C. 1695. JOSEPH, Salisbury 1640, had, perhaps, Mary, wh. m. 23 Mar. 1651, John French of Ipswich; but this name in Geneal. Reg. III. 55 and 6, is Moys. JOSEPH, Charlestown, m. 30 Oct. 1656, Mary, d. of Francis Norton, and she d. 10 Nov. 1657, being bound on a voyage when he made his will, 21 Dec. 1659, wh. was pro. 2 Apr. 1661, in wh. be calls Peter and Thomas of Sudbury, his brs. and "father Norton's four ds." his sis. gives land in Eng. all wh. may indicate him as s. of the first peter. JOSEPH, Sudbury,perhaps s. of the first Thomas, m.1662, Mary, d. of Robert Darvell, had Joseph, b. 1663; James, 1664; Moses, 1667; and five more, one of wh. was John, 1674, bef. she d. 1677. He next m. 14 July 1680, Mary, wid. of maj. Simon Willard, wh. d. 28 Dec. 1715, and he d. 16 Nov. 1717. Shattuck, in Farmer, says he was selectman 28 yrs. from 1662, yet we find not his name among the freem. of the Col. MOSES, Lyme, s. of the first James, was the first min. at that place, where he serv. 60 yrs.; tho. no ch. was gather. there bef. 1693. He m. Ruth, d. of John Picket, but of the issue I kn. nothing and d. 10 Nov. 1729. *NICHOLKS, Newbury, younger br. of the first James, b. a. 16161, came with him, freem. 17 May 1687, m. Mary, d. of capt. John Cutting had Mary, b. 15 Oct. 1641; Hannah, 30 Oct. 1643; John, 20 Jan. 1646; Nicholas, 22 Dec. 1647, H. C. 1667; Cutting, 23 Sept. 1649 , Sarah, 13 Sept. 1631 d. soon; Sarah, again, 22 Aug. 1653; Timothy, 2; June 1655; James, 16 May 1657; Abigail, 11 Apr. 1659; Rachel, 10 May 1661; Thomas, 20 June 1663; and Rebecca, 18 May 1665, wh. d. at 18 yrs. He was rep. 1660, 79, and 80, and d. 9 Nov. 1701. Hannah m. 14 May 1663, Peter Cheney; and Sarah m. 13 Sept. 1674, Matthew Pettingell. NICHOLAS, Salem, s. of the preced. preach. many yrs. at Haddam, but having, in 1682 a call to S. to assist the venera. John Higginson, he became his collea. ord. 14 Nov. 1683, was one of the promoters of the horrible delusion of 1692, and yet a d. of his noble collea. was one of the accused. He did not altogether lose his faculties, as his let. to Mather of the character of his uncle, wh. is certain. one of the best parts of the strange. compound of materials in the Magnalia; as also a good epistle to John Higginson in London, preserve in 3 Mass. Hist. Coll. VII. 212, will prove. He d. 13 Dec. 1717, unm. *OLIVER, Boston, s. of John of B. m. Ann, d. of Hon. Andrew Belcher, had Ann, h. 17 Apr. 1704; Oliver, 4 July 1705, d. in few days; Oliver, again, 1 Sept. 1707, d. at 7 mos.; Belcher, 10 Oct. 1709, H. C. 1727; Sarah, 21 Oct. 1710; John, 12 Aug. 1713, d. young; and John, again, 8 Aug. 1718, d. in few weeks; was rep. 1714, oft. aft. took sec. w. 6 Feb. 1719, Catharine, wid. of sec. David Jeffries; and d. 16 Mar. 1721. Hutchinson, wh. well kn. him, gives character, II. 249. *PETER, Sudbury 1639, came in the Confidence, 1638, from Southampton, latter part of Apr. aged 47, with s. Thomas, 15; d. Eliz. and three serv. is call. yeoman in the custom-ho. rec. but aft. arr. gentleman. He was of Penton, in Co. Hants, wh. is near Andover; went home aft. short visit or explorat. here, well pleased with what he saw at Watertown, and next yr. came again in the Jonathan, with sev. friends, and Nicholas, Dorothy, Abigail, and Peter, all prob. his ch. beside John Waterman, Richard Barnes, William Street, Agnes Bent, Eliz. Plimpton, and Agnes Blanchard, wh. I judge to be his serv. as he paid for their passages; but such was not Agnes Bent, for she paid for herself, for d. Agnes, Thomas Blanchard's w. with her h. and Richard Barnes, s. of said Blanchard's w. and prob. Eliz. Plimpton. Blanchard's w. with inf. d. on the passage, 15 days out, and Barnes's gr.mo. d. this side of the Banks. He had share in the first div. of lds. in his town, and again in the 2d and 3d, made 1640, was freem. 13 May 1640, selectman 18 yrs. rep. 1640, 1, and 50, deac. of the ch. and d. 23 Sept. 1657. Three yrs. bef. he gave his est. in Old Eng. to his eldest s. Thomas, and in his will, of wh. Thomas was made excor. made the day bef. his d. he names other ch. Peter, Joseph, Eliz. w. of Josiah Haynes, Dorothy, w. of John Haynes, Abigail, w. of Thomas Plympton, d.-in-law Mary, w. of his s. Thomas, and kinsm. Shadrach Hapgood. *PETER, Sudbury, s. of the preced. m. 30 Nov. 1654, Eliz. d. of Robert Darvell, had Eliz. b. 26 Aug. 1655, wh. m. 21 Aug. 1677, Thomas Hammond; Peter, 12 Feb. 1657; and, perhaps, more, freem. 1672, rep. 1679, 90, and 1. RICHARD, Newbury 1647. *THOMAS, Sudbury, eldest s. of Peter the first, had share in the first, sec. and third grants of lds. or divisions on sett. 1639 and 1640 and his f.'s est. in Eng. to wh. be had been sent some yrs. aft. he was brot. in 1638 at the age of 15, came again in the Speedwell, arr. 27 July 1656, in. Mary, d. of Walter Haynes, who had been his fell. passeng. in early youth, by the Confidence, was twelve yrs. a selectman, and rep. at the sec. sess. 1664; d. 7 Dec. 1666. His will, of 20 May 1664, names w. Mary, but no ch. ment. sis. Eliz. Dorothy, and Abigail, and two eldest ds. of Josiah Tredaway, whose w. Sufferance was sis. of his w. He had est. at Foxcote, near Andover, Eng. and was interest. in iron works at Concord, also in those of the Leonards at Taunton. *THOMAS, Newbury, s. of the first James, in. 28 Dec. 1669, Martha Pierce, and for sec. w. 24 Sept. 1677, Eliz. d. of Stephen Greenleaf, had Sarah, b. 14 Sept. 1670; Martha, 24 Feb. 1673; Daniel, 30 Aug@ 1674, by the first w. and by the next, James, 3 July 1678; Thomas, 2 Oct. 1679; Parker, 29 Oct. 1681; Eliz. 29 Feb. 1684; Joseph, 5 Aug. 1688; Moses, 29 Jan. 1692; Rebecca, 19 Apr. 1700; and Judith, 17 Apr. 1702; freem. 1671, and Capt. 1690 in war with E. Ind. and rep. 1689, 90, and 2. THOMAS, Newbury, youngest s. of Nicholas the first, by w. Sarah had Bethia, b. 20 Oct. 1691; and Rebecca, 20 Jan. 1694, d. in few days. TIMOTHY, Newbury, s. of the first Nicholas, in. 13 Jan. 1681, Mary, d. of John Knight, had James, b. 12 Mar. 1684; Abigail, 28 Feb. 1685; Mary, 28 Dec. 1686; Sarah, 26 Mar. 1689; Timothy, 25 Jan. 1691 Rachel, 8 Feb. 1694; John, 19 Feb. 1696; Martha, 14 Mar. 1697; and Nicholas, 7 Afar. 1701; was freem. 1684, and d. 1718. WILLIAM, Newbury, s. of James the first, m. 6 Nov. 1685, Sarah Cogswell, had John, b. 27 July 1686; William, 11 Sept. 1688; Sarah, 10 May 1691, d. young, Moses, 27 Jan. 1694, d. in 3 wks.; Susanna, 25 Feb. 1696; Mary, 24 May 1699, d. young; Sarah, again, 5 Dec. 1703; and Parker, 17 Jan. 1705. Considering, the very short distance betw. the resid. of the two progenit. of this widely diffus. name, in the W. border of Hants, and the E. frontier of Wilts, where ea. stood in favora. social position in the latter days of Queen Eliz. no doubt can be felt of their common origin. Fifteen of this name had, in 1834, been gr. at Harv. twelve at Yale (all descend. of Stonington James), and eleven at other N. E. Coll.
