RONIN Il Galeone
Ronin is an Italian group based in Milano. I have been their guest accordionist from time to time, and they asked me to sing Il Galone, an anarchist song from the 60´s, on their newest CD entitled ´Lemming´. The CD is produced by Ghost Records, Italy.
Check out the stunningly beautiful animated video of Il Galeone, produced by Ericailcane (sic), a very talented young filmmaker from Bologna.

COMMISSIONS
SubRosa
Sept 14-15 and 21-22, 2007 Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center in Seattle.
I am composing a soundtrack for choreographer Cheronne Wong, inspired by espionage, surveillance, and deciphering codes. The Conet Project is a big inspiration for this piece. It will premiere at the Langston Hughes Cultural Center in Seattle September.
Tickets

Exile
I am composing songs for a musical regarding the industrial prison system in America. Conceived by Holly Eckert in Seattle, and created in collaboration with writer L.A. Heberlein & myself, it will premiere at the Broadway Performance Hall in Seattle.

Naruwan
A group of kids from the Camphor Tree School in Shijr City, Taipei County have been playing samba for a few years. I spent February, May & June 2007 in Taiwan, working on a commission by Gordon Tsai, founder of the Dream Community.
I arranged Taiwanese traditional & popular music with various samba beats, got Jonathan Gregory & Xiao Mei to teach them the songs & to sing while drumming, and I produced a recording of 9 songs. Recording engineer: Guan Yuu
Read my Taiwan Blog at Patty Herlevi's site.
You can see some of my Taiwan photos, if you become my friend on myspace.

Loud Omission
I composed a soundtrack for Ecuadoran choreographer Carla Barragan in January, 2007, and the piece was premiered in Quito, Ecuador. The US premiere will be in Seattle in Fall, 2007. The music features voice, percussion, clarinet, and saxophone, and sounds.

NEW CD RECORDINGS
KMFDM: Superstar
My housemate Jim Knodle (trumpet) & I (alto sax) are the horn section for 'Superpower' on KMFDM's new CD, Tohuvabohu.
This is my 3rd time recording with them, it's a blast.

Die Resonanz Stanonczi
This wonderful Austrian ensemble was born in Spring, 2006, and we just finished our third tour in April, 2007. It's really quite a magical formation. Featuring award-winning accordionist Johannes Steiner, Robert Kainer, myself, with clarinettist Norbert Asen often participating. Our CD is released by NoMansLand in Berlin, Germany.

MAISIE: Festa in Casa / Balera Metropolitana (Snowdonia/Spoot)
Cinzia la Fauci & Alberto Scotti run the Messina-based indy label Snowdonia, which has tons of releases. They also play in Maisie, and invited me to collaborate. Festa in Casa is a result of collaboration through the mail - they sent me tracks, I wrote silly words & sang. Balera Metropolitana is the 2nd CD, full of pop wonders, with the collaboration of dozens of musicians throughout Italy. Some real popular gems! I spent a week in April at Seahorse Studios in Arco Felice (Napoli) to lay down various tracks on Balera. This fabulous double CD will come out on our labels, and we're looking for distribution worldwide. Please inquire!

Recent Events & Forthcoming CDs
Amy Denio & Francesco Calandrino: Venerdi' Santo (Spoot/dito produ(a)zioni)
Friends for a few years, Denio went to Alcamo Sicily to visit Francesco Calandrino in April, and this incredible recording is a document of their time together. Raw, beautiful, instrumental passages & field recordings.
Recorded on Good Friday, Easter Weekend (Venerdi' Santo). We made our own processione siciliana. CD will be available in November.

FRANCISCO LOPEZ
My dear pal Francisco Lopez wrote to say 'the long-awaited projects with the "absolute noise ensemble" just came out on a double-CD release put out by Blossoming Noise.
This includes both excerpts from the live shows of the ensemble (at Sonar Festival, Observatori Festival, Abaixadors Deu, MACBA, and Craig Pumping Station - Montreal, between 2000 and 2002), and the big guitar project (from 1992 to 2003). I played some guitar, can't wait to hear the results!

*Capodanno a Napoli!
New Year's Eve gig in Naples, Italy!
My Quintetto alla Busara accompanied Les Farfadais, a French circus in Piazza del Plebiscito, the biggest piazza in Napoli, with no rehearsal & inclement weather.
They made us wear white flannel zip-up pyjamas and winsome blue hats made of carpet fragments. Soaking wet instruments. International TV Broadcast. Delirio totale. Nonostante la pioggia, nessuna prova generale, e le cose techniche andando ai pezzi, e' andato molto bene! Prodotto di ArtScena.

2005 Hottest Year On Record
2005 proved to be one of the two hottest years in recorded history. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) just released new findings: 19 of the hottest 20 years on record have occurred since 1980. As atmospheric and ocean temperatures rise, we are facing increased ice melt and sea level rise, as well as more severe weather events. The good news is that we have solutions available today that can help curb global warming. The Climate Stewardship Act (HR 759) would reduce overall U.S. carbon emissions—one of the leading causes of global warming. Please urge your representative to protect future generations by cosponsoring this important bill today.

Some toy manufacturers are falsely labeling their products "phthalate-free." Six of the eight labeled toys tested contained phthalates, which are a class of chemicals linked with a range of harmful health effects. Please take a moment to tell the Federal Trade Commission that parents and consumers need to know the truth about toxic chemicals in children's products.

WOMAN IN AUDIENCE: 'I don't really understand. How is the new (Medicare) plan going to fix the problem?'
PRESIDENT BUSH: (Verbatim response)
'Because the -- all which is on the table begins to address the big cost drivers. For example, how benefits are calculated, for example, is on the table. Whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There's a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those -- changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be -- or closer delivered to that has been promised. Does that make any sense to you? It's kind of muddled. Look, there's a series of things that cause the -- like, for example, benefits are calculated based upon the increase of wages, as opposed to the increase of prices. Some have suggested that we calculate -- the benefits will rise based upon inflation, supposed to wage increases. There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into effect. In other words, how fast benefits grow, how fast the promised benefits grow, if those -- if that growth is affected, it will help on the red.'

Check out this beautiful/intense blog by Mazen Kerbaj, a trumpet player & cartoonist from Beirut. My friend Ricardo Arias was evacuated from Beirut last summer, having played several concerts & taught a workshop with his rubber balloon. The world is increasingly strange, and full of dark beauty.
And more chilling still, listen to Mazen Kerbaj's recording of trumpet improvisation with bombs, the night of July 15/16, 2006.

"ragusa is a very beautiful baroque town in the south of sicily.
tourists come to visit the architectural splendors such as the cathedral of st george - the duomo, but often find it difficult to find the way, since the old town is full of narrow winding streets.
the front door of the house where our recording sessions were held is often open to have some cool breeze, tourists passing stick their nose inside and ask where they can find the duomo.
one august morning we decided to help them and put up some signs, in the wrong direction of course, leading pass the courtyard where we held our illegal concert using traditional instruments, voice, loop station, various kinds of feedback, and tapes with field recordings and non definable recordings "
