What does AMX stand for and what is the 4080 part? I get asked this a lot, and the answer is simple.
An AMX is a car, produced by American Motors from 1968 to 1970. An AMX is a two-seater car, without a back seat, just two seats. An AMX from 1968 has a V-8 engine displacing 290, 343 or 390 cubic inches topped off with a four-barrel carburetor. Transmissions were four-speed manual or three-speed automatic. Dual exhausts were standard. Wheelbase is short, at just 97 inches.
The 4080 part is the series production number of the 1968 AMX I own. While these numbers are not in exact production order, they do appear to be unique. The actual number on my cars' dash is 04080.
The AMX name was used in latter years by AMC. The Javelin AMX was produced from 1971 until 1974. Some will have V-8s of 401 cubic inches stock from the factory. After the Javelin, the AMX name appeared on other AMC variants of Hornets (1977), Concords (1978) and Spirits (1979-1980).
