This walk in the state's historic capital goes by the site of the Golden Fleece Tavern which
was the meeting place of the Committees of Inspection and Observation during the war. The Committees initially enforced the
embargo against British goods and later became the conduit for information relating to the war.
FLORIDA
FERNANDINA BEACH YR1755 FIRST COAST TRAIL FORGERS
This walk goes along a portion of the route of the invasion of British East Florida by Continental
troops. The forces engaged in a skirmish at the south end of Amelia Island at Oldtown Bluff.

ST. AUGUSTINE YR1128 HAPPY WANDERERS
From 1763-1784, the British occupied the Castillo San Marco, re-named Ft. St. Mark, which protected
the loyalist residents of East Florida. During the Revolution American ships blockaded the Matanzas Inlet to prevent re-supply
of the fort. Several patriot prisoners were held in the fort and the St. Francis Barracks, including the Lt. Governor of SC
and Edward Rutledge, Thomas Hayward and Charles Pinckney, signers of the Declaration of Independence. The walk passes by both
the Castillo San Marcos and St. Francis Barracks.
GEORGIA
SAVANNAH YR1366 THE HAPPY WANDERERS
Much of this walk wanders through the site of the Battle of Savannah in 1779 which ended a
22 day siege of American and French forces by the British. General Pulaski was mortally wounded leading a charge
against the British during this action.
SAVANNAH YR1365 THE HAPPY WANDERERS
This walk on Skidaway Island includes the site of a skirmish where local patriots drove off
a force of foraging British marines.
SAVANNAH YR0051 THE HAPPY WANDERERS
The Wormsloe historic site included in this walk was the location of the estate of the Jones
family. Noble Wimberly Jones commanded a company of marines from this site who patrolled the waterway passing by the estate
to defend the area against British incursions.
LOUISIANA

Walk passes the site of breastworks from which the guns of the Spanish forces, allied with
the Americans, bombarded British forces at the Fort of Baton Rouge and forced their surrender in Sept. 1779.

The walk goes by the route of Benedict Arnold's march to capture Quebec in 1775.

This walk includes the Maryland State House where Washington resigned his commission as commander

BALTIMORE YR1070 BALTIMORE WALKING CLUB
Ft. McHenry was originally a pre-Revolutionary fort called Ft. Whetstone. It was further fortified
during the Revolution by American troops with 18 guns to protect Baltimore Harbor. In addition a chain was stretched across
the harbor to prevent enemy ships from entering. As a result, Baltimore was never attacked during the War.
C & O CANAL MC MAHON'S MILL TO LITTLE ORLEANS YR0749 MARYLAND VOLKSSPORT ASSOCIATION
This segment of the C & O Canal walks series includes Ft. Frederick. The fort, built
for the French and Indian War, was used to house British and Hessian prisoners during the Revolution.

built.

The walk passes Woodberry's Point where a seven gun fort was located during the Revolution
to protect the harbor. The patriots used Beverly as their main port of operations after the British closed Boston harbor.

Salem was a major port for American privateers during the Revolution. Privateers from the
town seized 455 British ships during the course of the conflict. The walk goes by the wharf area from which the privateers
operated.

The walk passes the Newcomb House where war strategy meetings were held.

The route includes the Bullard Tavern
whose owner climbed the nearby hill to fire three shots to alert the Minutemen to march to Concord. The Tavern was also
used as a site where bullets were made for the Minutemen.

The Battle of Princeton was fought here in 1777, a victory for the Americans. The walk passes

of 1783, thus making Princeton the de facto capital of the colonies. Walkers may do an additional 5k option through the battlefield.

YOUNGSTOWN YR1266 NIAGARA ESCARPMENT VOLKSSPORT ASSOCIATION
The walk begins at Old Fort Niagara, used by British, Loyalist and allied Native American
forces throughout most of the war. It was from Ft. Niagara that British Lt.Col. St.Leger led his forces to meet with
Burgoyne at Albany, a plan that met with failure when St.Leger was stopped at Ft. Stanwix and Burgoyne was defeated at
Saratoga.

The walk includes Ft. Johnston, originally a British fort. After colonial governor Josiah
Martin fled here, the local militia forced him to flee on a British navy ship, thus ending royal rule in the Carolinas. The
fort was burned by patriot militia in July 1776.

was used by Cornwallis as a headquarters.

ABERDEEN YR1732 OHIO VOLKSSPORT ASSOCIATION
This is one of three walks in Ohio that go through the territory of the Virginia Military
District. This land was granted by Congress in 1781 to veterans from Virginia who had been promised enlistment bounties of
land by the Colony of Virginia. The grants ranged in size from 200 to 15,000 acres depending on the veteran's rank.

The walk includes the part of this town that was in the Virginia Military District.
MANCHESTER YR1758 OHIO VOLKSSPORT ASSOCIATION
Part of the Virginia Military District, Manchester was the first permanent settlement in the
District.

This town was established in the Virginia Military District.
PENNSYLVANIA
BETHLEHEM YRO713 LIBERTY BELL WANDERERS
This walk passes by several Revolution sites including the Single Brethern's House
which seved as a hospital for the Contintental Army, part of the route of the evacuation of the Liberty Bell from Philadelphia
to Allentown, God's Acre Cemetery, which has burials from soldiers who died at the hospital, the Sun Inn where officers
and officials lodged, including Washington, John and Samuel Adams and Lafayette, who recuperated from a wound here. However
Lafayette subsequently chose to convalesce at the nearby Beckel home.
CARLISLE YR 1598 SUSQUEHANNA ROVERS VOLKSMARCH CLUB
This walk passes by the monument to Molly Pitcher who took her husband's place with an artillery
battery during combat and was subsequently recognized for her bravery.
CHAMBERSBURG YR 0127 CUMBERLAND VALLEY LEAD FOOT CLUB
Passes by the area where Colonel Chambers assembled a militia unit which subsequently had the honor
of becoming the first unit to be made a Continental line unit by Congress. The unit marched to Boston to assist Washington
in the seige of British forces.
COLLEGEVILLE YR618 LIBERTY BELL WANDERERS
The route includes the Great Reading Road, where Washington's troops encamped, and Augustus
Lutheran Church which served as a hospital during the Revolution. Fifteen unknown Revolution soldiers are buried in the church's
graveyard.

The walk route goes through the Ephrata Cloister. During the Revolution a hospital of the
wounded and ill soldiers was housed in the Cloister.

Both routes pass the Moravian Church, used as a hospital by colonial forces during the
Revolution.
NEW HOPE YR 532 LIBERTY BELL WANDERERS
The walk in this historic town includes several sites with Revolution connections. The town
was fortified in 1776 against British attacks. Washington twice had his headquarters here and his troops encamped here on
their march to the Battle of Monmouth.
PHILADELPHIA YR 0482,0621,1278 LIBERTY BELL WANDERERS
YR 482 goes past the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
Yr 0621 goes through Washington Square and passes by the site of a prison used
for captured soldiers as well as the burial ground where many prisoners were interred. Also goes by the Tomb of the Unknown
Revolutionary Soldier.
YR1278 includes the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall as well as the house where Jefferson
wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Betsy Ross house.
VALLEY FORGE YR 1559,0288 LIBERTY BELL WANDERERS
YR 288 passes most of the major sites in Valley Forge National Historical Park. YR 1559 includes
Washington's HQ.
YORK YR 1771,1768(bike) YORK WHITE ROSE WANDERERS
These routes include the colonial courthouse where the Continental Congress met after evacuating
from Philadelphia. It was here that the Articles of Confederation were passed.
RHODE ISLAND
BRISTOL YR 1557 WALKN'MASS
The walk passes the Joseph Reynolds House, used by the Marquis
de Lafayette as his headquarters in 1778.
NEWPORT YR729 WALKN'MASS
Newport was occupied by the British in 1776 and a long siege
commenced which culminated in the Battle of Rhode Island, the first joint action of American and French troops. After the
British evacuated, the city became the base of operations for French forces in the colonies. The walk includes the Hunter
House which served as headquarters of French Admiral deTarnay.
PROVIDENCE YR 1092 WALKN'MASS
Providence saw numerous troop movements through its streets during the
conflict. Both American and French troops were quartered there and it was from this city that Rochambeau began his march to
Yorktown. On the walk through the Brown University campus you will pass University Hall which served as a hospital and barracks
for American troops.
SOUTH CAROLINA
BEAUFORT YR 327 ASHEVILLE AMBLERS
The walk goes by the graveyard of St. Helen's Episcopal Church where British soldiers were
interred during the occupation of the city in 1780 after the fall of Charleston.
CHARLESTON YR 1358 ASHEVILLE AMBLERS
This trail through historic Charleston includes the area blockaded by the British fleet on
the water side and Cornwallis' army from the the land. The fall of Charleston in 1780 allowed Cornwallis to rampage through
the south until he himself was cornered at Yorktown.
CHARLESTON/MAGNOLIA PLANTATION YR0294 ASHEVILLE AMBLERS
British forces under Lord Cornwallis landed at Magnolia Plantation in February 1780 to begin
the siege of Charleston.

This route takes you through the battlefield of King's Mountain, The "Turning Point in the
South" of the Revolution.

BENNINGTON YR1545 EMPIRE STATE CAPITAL VOLKSSPORTERS
This route travels by the site of the powder house whose capture was the objective of Hessian
troops who were defeated at the Battle of Bennington in nearby Walloomsac, NY. This defeat denied the British needed supplies
and was a contributing factor in their defeat at Saratoga.
VIRGINIA
ALEXANDRIA YR 0061 NORTHERN VIRGINIA VOLKSMARCHERS
The route goes through a cemetary which includes the grave of an unknown soldier whose remains
were found in 1821, buried in an ammunition box and wearing a uniform indicating that he was a Revolutionary era soldier from
Kentucky. The walk also passes the Gadsby Tavern where Washington was feted in a reception upon his resigning his commission
at the end of the war, and Christ Church, whose lawn was used as an encampment area by American forces.
FREDERICKSBURG YR0115 GERMANNA VOLKSSPORT ASSOCIATION
Passes by the site of the Frederickstown Gun Manufactory, owned by Fielding Lewis, brother-in-law
of George Washington, and Charles Dick. The owners produced and financed guns for the American forces during the conflict.
The walk also goes by a statue in honor of General Hugh Mercer who was killed at the Battle of Princeton.
HAMPTON (FORT MONROE) YR0874, PENINSULA PATHFINDERS OF VIRGINIA
The British fortified and occupied Fort George, a predecessor of Fort Monroe, until the last
days of the Revolution when Cornwallis moved his troops to Yorktown.

The route includes the area where American mounted militia pursued a British foraging party
as well as waterfront on the James River where the American sloop Patriot was captured by the Royal Navy in April 1781.
NORFOLK YR 469 GATOR VOLKSMARSCH CLUB
On New Year's Day 1776, British ships opened fire on Norfolk, burning much of it to the ground.
Colonial forces then destroyed the remainder of the town to prevent the British from occupying it. It was the only American
town destroyed and subsequently rebuilt during the Revolution. The walk passes by St. Paul' Church where a British cannonball
remains embedded in the church wall.
RICHMOND YR 591 LEE LEPUS VOLKSVERBAND
The walk goes by monuments and markers relating to Benedict Arnold's raid on Richmond in 1781.
Arnold, who had now joined the British, burned Richmond after seizing supplies intended for the American forces battling Cornwallis.
RICHMOND YR 1536 LEE LEPUS VOLKSVERBAND
This walk through historic Richmond includes a plaque honoring Ann Marie Lane who joined the Connecticut
Contintental Line disguised as a man.She served with distinction and was wounded in battle.
SMITHFIELD YR1169 PENINSULA PATHFINDERS OF VIRGINIA
Walk starts at Ft. Boykin Historical Park. Originally built in 1623, the site was refortified
during the Revolution and was instrumental in the defense of the James River and in protecting against the raids of Tarleton's
British cavalry.
SUFFOLK YR0668 GATOR VOLKSMARSCH CLUB
The route includes the area burned by the British on May 13, 1779.
VIRGINIA BEACH YR 1163(BIKE) GATOR VOLKSMARSCH CLUB
This bike route goes by the shoreline bordering the area where French and British navies fought
the Battle of the Capes in September 1781. The French victory left the British garrisons at Yorktown and Gloucester Point
isolated from supply lines and reinforcements.
